The Upper Falls News is an email newsletter about what's going on in our village.  The Upper Falls News is brought to you by the Upper Falls Area Council but it's intended to cover any and all news in the village.

The Quick Red Fox - Pat Kaufman spotted a red fox crossing Elliot St one morning this past week - probably just another morning commuter hurrying to work.

New Years Will Soon Be Here - The Tzu Chi Foundation  will be holding their New Year Candlelight Ceremony on Feb 6 at their Summer St Service Center (the old Methodist Church).  There will be a receptions at 2PM, followed by the Candlelight Ceremony at 2:30 PM.  Everyone from the neighborhood is invited to the free event to help ring in the new year with prayers for a peaceful and disaster-free world in the coming year.  Call 617-762-0569 to register.

The Stairs Are Back - The stairs from Echo Bridge down to Ellis St have been rebuilt and are open for business again.

Did You Know ... ? .. that astronauts drink recycled urine"Did You Know ...?"  features an interesting and random fact every issue, collected by ten-year-old Upper Falls resident Jayla Reilly.

'Where Am I" Answer - The sign is on the corner of Chestnut and Elliot streets facing the river.   This is the last of the original Upper Falls Historic District signs.  The Historic District was created in 1975.  Roughly ten years later, Upper Falls resident and then Historic Commission member Leslie Friedman designed this sign and local historian Ken Newcomb compiled the text.  A number of these signs were hung around the neighborhood.  Years later, in 2004, a new design was created - the white on black signs with the picture of Echo Bridge that you can see around the neighborhood today.  This last-of-the-originals sign is peeling and in pretty tough shape and probably should be preserved as part of the history of the Historic District.  The meta-history - i.e. the history of the history of the history ...
