Masa Badminton Tournament 2013

March 22, 2013

Yes, it was the most anticipated event of the year for all MASA members and those that associate with us. We were happy to have 26 participants that participated in at least one categories. During the tournament, three categories were available for the participants, which are Men Singles, Women Singles and Mixed Double. Despite the technical difficulty in booking the gym and large number of participants, we were able to complete all the matches for all the categories within 3 hours. Yes, we know it was kind of rush especially with the Single Men and Mixed Double, therefore we really appreciate the patients and cooperation by the all the participants. As for the results,

Men Singles: 1st Prize: Calvin Wan; 2nd Prize: Zong Yu

Women Singles: 1st Prize: Gieven; 2nd Prize: Fara

    Mixed Doubles: 1st Prize: Hazmi/Angel; 2nd Prize: Sam/Jiayun

Carnival of Solidarity

March 15, 2013

Carnival of Solidarity has once again struck the U of S campus by storm and you can bet your bottom dollar that MASA was a part of it. A wonderful event organized by the International Studies Students Association (ISSA) and Global Connections Student Committee celebrating a night of everything cultural as well as the awareness and advocacy of social justice. The event began at 7p.m. and was held at the trusty Louis Pub at the University of Saskatchewan. What a turnout it was! Thanks to the vision and efficiency of the organizers, the night could not have been run any better. Here, participating groups, MASA included were given a booth area to showcase their association or social group. Coming from a Malaysian, there is nothing that gets us international students going more than to expose our wonderful country and culture to others as well as educating ourselves of others. The event also played host to several cultural workshops as well as amazing performances each student association had to offer. It is also worth mentioning the performance by four very talented MASA individuals who performed an amazing rendition of Siti Nurhaliza's Cindai that can be viewed on our Facebook group. We hold it to our hearts that the University of Saskatchewan and related international student groups and associations are making big steps into uniting people through the celebration of culture. It is MASA's promise to continue participating in these events as there is so much we have to offer as well as receive. See you at the Carnival Of Solidarity 2014!

Games Night

March 9, 2013

Amidst the hustle and bustle of the average day of a university student, the MASA annual games night was a success. Members were all eager and excited to engage in the fun filled therapy of gaming. Games that were present for all to play were Monopoly, Mafia, and of course, an X-box console was present. This very night might have also been an introduction to some of the MASA members to the traditional Malaysian Game of Congkak or may have been a warm reminder to those who know the game, reminiscing in the good old days of our childhood. Heated dance battles on the X-box game: Dance Central ensued which may or may not have lead to the discovery of some of our members dancing talents? Nonetheless, the committee had a blast planning as well as participating in the event and we hope all who attended share our joy and pleasure. We look forward to seeing you all in our future events and welcome suggestions anytime. Cheers!

Snowboarding and Skiing Trip to Table Mountain

February 16, 2013

Winter is here and got nothing to do? Well for those that might have no clue of what to do for the winter break, this sort of thing we in MASA UofS do every year! On a nice warm winter morning at around 8:30 am with a total of 15 people showing up we went on the road to Table Mountain travelling for about 2 hours. Some people get lost but once everyone was there we got ready to have some fun! With different activities such as skiing, snowboarding, and playing until 4:30 pm. Table mountain is a good place to have fun for winter games if you are looking for the cheaper price ski resort. In total you anly spend about $100 for a day trip! Everyone was tuckered out with the adventure to Table Mountain that we decided to go home before it was getting late. The travel back was fun especially for the group that got lost all the way to Edmonton, wow they must have completely clueless! Anyways everyone had fun and enjoyed the trip! So, for those that didn't get the chance to join the trip, there is always next winter. =D

Chinese New Year Dinner

Feb 9, 2013

Xing Nian Kuai Le, Gong Xi Fa Chai, Selamat Tahun Baru Cina. All phrases synonymous with the celebration of the Lunar New Year or Chinese New Year as celebrated in Malaysia and many other asian countries. Traditionally a celebration of the coming of spring and a prosperous yield in crops, it is now a reason for all to celebrate a new year twice (After the western new year of course). The annual Chinese New Year reunion dinner is celebrated along with family and friends and as international students residing abroad, MASA provides as a family away from home to many of us and therefore a reunion dinner in Saskatoon is not something to be looked over. This years dinner was held at Genesis Family Restaurant and consisted of a full 12 course meal. Thanks to the hard work of our president and committee members, we were able to occupy a whole section of the restaurant for our dinner and the turnout was most impressive. Good food and good people is a recipe for a great time and the dinner proved to be a memorable one. The diverse nature of our association is the embodiment of our 'Rojak' mentality where the sum of its parts make up the delicious whole. Once again, we would like to wish everyone a wonderful and prosperous Chinese New Year and we hope to see you in our future events as well as next years Chinese New Year!

Movie Night

Jan 30, 2013

In collaboration with AIESEC Saskatoon at the University of Saskatchewan, MASA had yet again organized a movie night with the movie of interest being Rob-B-HoodA film starring the iconic Jackie Chan which promised a combination of comedy, action, and drama all bundled into one. The turnout of members eager to watch this movie was impressive despite the event being held on the night of a busy weekday. Thank you to all who attended and we hope you enjoyed the movie as much as we did.

Tobogganing & Skating

Jan 19, 2013

Extreme winter condition in Saskatoon did not hinder MASA and its members from embracing Canadian winter activities. The annual tobogganing trip to Diefenbaker Park had been a huge success despite temperatures in the -30 degree Celsius region. Slightly melted snow had made the hill extremely slippery and perfect for tobogganing. The 2 hours of tobogganing was followed by ice skating at the Meewasin Skating Rink in Downtown Saskatoon. The day proved to be tiring but was fun filled indeed. MASA would like to thank all who attended the event and hope to see you all in our upcoming events.

Potluck: Bring Your Best Dish Competition

Jan 5th, 2013

Christmas and New Years over and done with. We say goodbye to a blessed 2012 and hope for a better, more exciting 2013. To officially kick off our 2013 term, MASA had organized a potluck competition whereby members were challenged to bring their best culinary creations to the table to share as well as stand a chance to win prizes at the end of the night. The turnout was impressive and the dishes even more so. Many chose the traditional route by cooking up their favourite Malaysian, Chinese, Vietnamese savoury delicacies whereas others impressed everyone with amazing desserts and snacks. Enough food to feed an army, we all ate to our hearts content and am pretty sure nobody had any complaints whatsoever. At the end of the night, votes were tallied and the Laksa had won by a unanimous vote followed by the Lamb Curry and Apple Pie. Food aside, we were glad to see the warm gathering of friends as well as formally greet 3 of the newest Malaysians to have arrived to the U of S.

Overall, the night was a huge success and the committee of MASA agree in unison that this was one of the best potluck events ever held and we hope to keep in this tradition alive and running in the years to come. Rest assured, MASA has a plethora of event planned for the upcoming months of 2013 and we hope you are as excited as the committee in participating in these events.

PS* Do not feel the need to shy away from providing us with suggestions on events and voicing out any concerns you may have. We hope to keep improving and will not be able to do so without the help of all MASA members. Don't forget to check out our Facebookpage as well as this website for upcoming news and events.

Prince Albert Trip

Dec28-30, 2012

Every December after the tiring period of Term Final Exams, everyone will go either for a relaxation or adventure mode. This year, MASA organized an event, which included both that is the winter trip to Prince Albert National Park on December 28th 2012 for 3 days and 2 nights. 12 people went on the trip to relax and discover the winter wild life while having fun. We had barbeque and cooked Malaysian dishes for meals to feel the warmth of being at home and families. We are a BIG Malaysian family of course.

Everyone had fun. We went for cross country skiing and snow shoeing even tobogganing at Tube Hill. Overall, the trip was fun and relaxing and everyone had a blast before the term starts. Who says we need to go out of Saskatchewan to have fun? ^__^

Join us, MASA for the next winter trip and don't be shy to give more suggestion for other MASA events.

Oct 27, 2012

Pumpkin carving night is an event that is organized by MASA in conjunction with the popular western celebration of halloween. A celebration where people dress themselves in weird and whacky outfits in the spirit of fun and fright. With a Malaysian twist, pumpkin carving accompanied by treats and great company. A huge thanks to the some 30 members who participated which made the event a resounding success, producing unique and creative pumpkin carvings of all shapes and sizes. Thanksgiving Potluck

Oct 7, 2012

Thanksgiving is celebrated each year on the second Monday of October in Canada and this year it fell on the 7th October 2012. This year Thanksgiving celebration was celebrated in success again with lots of happy faces and it was celebrated at Shaun and Kerry’s place. Thanksgiving is not complete without turkey and we made homemade turkey with the help of Kerry. Thank you to all who came for the dinner.

Mid-Autum Festival

Sept 29, 2012

Mid-Autum Festival, a traditional chinese festival celebrating the harvest of crops under a full moon has taken a character of its own with Malaysians and now incorporates people of all races and cultures. The spirit of gathering and thanksgiving are synonymous with the Malaysian culture and to celebrate, the annual MASA lantern walk was organized and held at Kiwanis Memorial Park in downtown Saskatoon. Despite the already chilly weather, we were pleasantly surprised by the large number of MASA members who turned up to show their support. The event which started at 4p.m. included activities such as ice-breaking games and casual team sport such as soccer and frisbee.

As the sun had begun to set past the horizon, lanterns were handed out to members to light up and we were soon off on our merry lantern walk. Walking along the scenic Saskatchewan river with the aid of our brightly lit lanterns was truly a sight to behold.

Lastly, MASA would like to thank everyone who participated in the event and we will hope to see you all again in our future events with greater turnouts with much enthusiasm to help us grow as a society and family.

Ps: I have also included a wikipedia page link on the origins of the Mid-Autum Festival for those who are interested in reading it.

This year MASA took a trip to a corn maze in Youth Farm Corn Maze Rosthern. Getting lost in the corn maze is indeed a challenging and unique experience for the members of MASA. It is nice to enjoy the beautiful summer before the winter comes.
