Audition Information

Commonly Asked Questions

Q: When do auditions take place?

A: At the beginning of each semester, mandatory auditions are held for UT.  These dates vary in accordance to the date of the Student Activities Fair.  If you are an interested member, we expect that you will be attentive to our audition dates and be in contact with our current Executive Board so that you will be aware of the date, time, and place.

Q: Who is able to audition?

A: Anyone and everyone is welcome regardless of dance style, gender, and experience because at the end of the day, we are all a family in UT.  However, it is required that you are a full-time student (taking at least 12 credits per semester) at Salisbury University and that you are in good academic standing.

Q: What if I was already a member of UT, do I have to audition?

A: Yes, you still have to audition even if you were a past member of UT as auditions are a mandatory process for each to become and to remain a member of UT.

Q: What is the purpose for the auditions?

A: The purpose of our auditions is for you to "try out" UT and to see if we are the right fit for you.  We like to give you an idea of what you can expect to see and do when you become a member of UT.  In addition, these auditions help us to get to know you as a prospective member and allow you to showcase your abilities and talents.

Q: What do the auditions consist of?

A: At our auditions we will show you a short piece in which you will perform in groups of three.  Prior to auditioning in threes, there will be ample time for you to review and practice the routine we teach.  After auditions, you will be able to perform at least two eight-counts which can be something you have previously created or something you freestyle.  These eight-counts allow you to have the opportunity to showcase your dancing abilities and your personality.  Please expect the auditions to take at least 2-3 hours which may vary according to the number of people who are present; as our auditions will consist of introductions, an icebreaker activity, whole group stretching, the showing of the routine, teaching of the routine, auditions in threes of the routine, freestyle of two eight-counts, and a closing.

Q: What should I wear and bring?

A: We suggest that you come to auditions wearing clothing that is comfortable.  This may be dance attire and dance shoes or something as simple as sweatpants, a tee-shirt, sneakers or dancing bare feet.  It is important that you are comfortable and psychically able to dance in whatever you choose to wear so keep this in mind when selecting an outfit for auditioning in.  All that you need to bring is a bottle of water, a good attitude, and an idea of what your two eight-counts will be.

Q: Do I need to bring my own routine?

A: We will teach you a routine that we have prepared.  We do give you the opportunity to market yourself and your dancing capabilities by performing at least two eight-counts.  It is up to you whether you want to prepare two eight-counts prior to attending the auditions or if you would like to freestyle these two eight-counts.  Music will be provided but if you have a certain preference to what your two eight-counts are performed to we suggest you bring that music.

Q: What if the audition piece is not my style of dance?

A: We do understand that there are many dance styles.  We take into consideration that the piece we may use as our audition piece, may not necessarily be a style of dance that you are familiar with or have experience with.  To ensure that you are able to showcase what you may be familiar with and have experience with, we do allow you to dance two eight-counts that you have created or free-styled so that the auditions seem well-balanced for all those auditioning.  However, it is important that regardless the dance style for the auditions, you must at least try and reflect enthusiasm and have a good attitude while doing so.

Q: Do you need to have any dance experience?

A: Dance experience is welcome but never expected from all who wish to audition.  We feel that anyone with a passion for dance and a will to try is capable of having what it takes to be a dancer for UT.

Q: What if I cannot make the audition?

A: Auditions are mandatory in order for you to become a member of UT.  In order to accommodate interested members class schedules we offer two nights at different times on different days in which auditions are held for each semester.  If in the case you are unable to attend both of the auditions due to a class schedule conflict, you must contact a current member on the Executive Board in order for us to accommodate you in auditioning for UT.

Q: What is expected of me as a member once the auditions are through?

A: Once you have become a member, you will attend a practice which will showcase the dances for the semester, you will be given the dates of when these dances will be taught.  It is up to you to decide which dances you would like to be a part of as well as to check your syllabus and agenda to see if these dates will work with you.  When you commit to a dance you are expected to be there for each practice.  The week before our performances and dress rehearsals are mandatory for each member.  You are expected to show up on time to practices with a good attitude, dressed in dance attire, and ready to dance.  We understand that school is first priority for each of us but we ask that you respect each Executive Board member and UT member's time as we all have school priorities as well, therefore, we ask that you be organized and manage your time wisely in order to make practices.  Please understand that it is up to the choreographer's discretion to whether or not you will perform their dance.
