Geography Is Destiny: Big East Pushes Boundaries
By JOE DRAPE
Look no further than the Big East Conference's weekly men's basketball honors to see how what started as a quaint little league of seven hatched at a meeting in La Guardia Airport 26 years ago has grown up, and perhaps grown outsized. The player of the week, Roy Hibbert, is from charter member Georgetown; the rookie honors went to Dominic James of newcomer Marquette.
Throw in DePaul, Louisville, Cincinnati and South Florida, and the Big East has added a Midwest-by-Southeast flavor to become the biggest basketball conference in the nation with 16 teams. It is also the most competitive: five of its teams crowd the top 17 spots of the current Associated Press news media poll.
"We love that type of competition - it's a good kind of pressure," said Louisville Coach Rick Pitino, whose Cardinals are ranked No. 6. "When we come down to those final weeks of the season, there could be six or seven teams on the bubble for the N.C.A.A. tournament."
Not all of Pitino's coaching colleagues, however, are thrilled about that prospect. Mike Brey of Notre Dame, whose teams have gone 9-7 in the league the past two seasons and have misssed the N.C.A.A. tournament, has groused about a grueling conference schedule that has the Fighting Irish facing Louisville, No. 13 West Virginia and No. 3 Connecticut on the road.
Syracuse's Jim Boeheim, the only coach remaining from the conference's inaugural season in 1979, is not happy that only 12 teams will qualify for the Big East tournament at Madison Square Garden.
"I think everyone should have a chance to come to New York, and the opportunity to earn an N.C.A.A. bid," said Boeheim, referring to the automatic bid bestowed on the Big East tournament champion.
Still, in the ever-shifting economic landscape of college athletics, every coach and athletic director understands that big-time football is the architect of this expansive, if muddled, grouping of universities. The football-playing newcomers - Louisville, South Florida and Cincinnati - are hoping the Big East's inclusion in the lucrative Bowl Championship Series will boost their coffers as well as stature.
In explaining the Cardinals' jump to the Big East from Conference USA, Louisville's athletic director, Tom Jurich, pointed out that 12 of the universities were in the nation's top 33 media markets, that 7 of them - including New York, Boston and Chicago - were in the top 13, and that the Big East had a storied basketball history. He already had a basketball power - the Cardinals have won two national championships - but he was looking for a high-profile home to a rapidly rising football team, currently 7-2 and ranked No. 17 in the A.P. poll.
"Basketball has always carried our budget, but with the rise of our football program, we've been able to add four women's athletic programs and rebuild four other sports," Jurich said. "When you have football programs on the upswing like ours and South Florida combined with the rich tradition of Pitt, Syracuse and West Virginia, you have the potential of a really strong conference. In basketball, the Big East is already the best. For us, it is a perfect fit."
In turn, the Big East needed to find some football heft if it was to keep its B.C.S. affiliation after the defection of premier programs like Miami, Virginia Tech and Boston College to the Atlantic Coast Conference.
"We've been a hybrid and diluted since Day 1," said Big East Commissioner Mike Tranghese, noting that charter members Syracuse and Boston College had strong football programs. "Having strong college football is a fact of life. This was the best opportunity for all 16 of our institutions. We could have separated two years ago, but none saw any upside in doing that."
The new Big East looks much like the original league, especially at the end of the bench, where several high-profile coaches sit. The league made famous by legendary coaches like St. John's Lou Carnesecca, Villanova's Rollie Massimino and Georgetown's John Thompson now has two recently inducted Hall of Famers in Boeheim and Connecticut Coach Jim Calhoun, a successful coach with an outsized personality in Pitino and a bevy of up and comers.
Among them are John Thompson III, who is intent on resuscitating the program his father built; West Virginia's John Beilein, who led the Mountaineers to an N.C.A.A. regional final last year only to lose to Louisville in overtime; and Villanova's Jay Wright, whose No. 4-ranked Wildcats are picked to win the Big East, according to the preseason poll of the conference coaches (a poll conducted well before UConn won the Maui Invitational in impressive fashion).
In the Big East's new configuration, each team plays 10 opponents once, three teams twice and two not at all. The better teams have been paired to make the 105 games
