National Directory

Laine Clark

In lieu of writing a research paper, I compiled a national list of university and college art museums and galleries. The main purpose of this list was to shine a light on how many university and college art museums and galleries there are in the United States through the creation of a national database. It was amazing discovering how many colleges and
universities have them, but it was also interesting discovering how many did not have them. However, this list is just the beginning. As the years pass I do not doubt that more and more university art museums and galleries will be created.
As with every kind of list of this magnitude, there are probably some museums/galleries that have been overlooked. However, to my knowledge this list is as close as it gets. Out of the approximately 4,400 colleges
and universities in the United States, the total number of art museums and galleries at those institutions is approximately 680, with about 10% of those accredited by the American Association of University museums. Thirty made it onto our Notable University Art Museums list. Every state had at least five museums or galleries with some having numbers reaching above thirty. The top four states are California with ninety, followed by Maryland with fifty-two, Virginia with fifty, and Iowa with forty-five. These figures include all spaces on a campuses that exhibit art whether it be collections, student/faculty art or traveling exhibitions from more well known artists. We left out community colleges, however, in the future we plan to include them.
As you will note many of the museums and galleries on this list can be found by clicking on the link beneath it. However, some of schools have not devoted a web-page to their museum/gallery. Some only have the exhibition schedule available on their website; others have a small paragraph providing general information. Also, you will notice that some of the museums and galleries listed have no website link available at all. This is because there was no information on the website except for the mention that they have that particular museum/ gallery on campus. In order to view the lists, click on the state you wish to see and it will open up in a new tab.
