Virginia Directory

This class was originally titled University Art Museums in Virginia, but at the very very end of the class it became clear that this title did not actually describe what the students had accomplished and so I took the liberty of changing the name to University Art Museums & Galleries in Virginia.
The first problem we encountered when we began counting university art museums in Virginia was how to include galleries. This was trickier than it might seem. The reasonable solution would appear to be to distinguish clearly between museums and galleries and be done with it. But that move, as it turns out, is actually not as straightforward as it sounds. While some of those galleries might be focused on local contemporary art, without any collections, for some just the opposite is true
Virginia Commonwealth Universitys own Anderson Gallery being the obvious case in point. It is one of the leading venues for contemporary art in Richmond, and the whole Commonwealth in fact, in addition to having a small but still important permanent collection. Our final solution then was to list museums and galleries by college and university, and only if they are actively engaged in exhibiting art during the school year.
About 50 of the 65 colleges and universities in Virginia (independent, private, and public) have university art museums and galleries. However, several schools have galleries only, which are not always open to students or the public, nor do they have any significant web presence. These include: Randolph-Macon College
s Flippo Gallery, Emory & Henry Colleges 1912 Gallery, and Byars Hall Student Galleries, the Cleo Driver Miller Gallery at Bridgewater College, Gallery 121 at The University of Virginias College at Wise, and finally the Barry Art Gallery at Marymount University in Arlington.
Accordingly, please find below a list of 25 important sites for college and university art museums and galleries in Virginia organized alphabetically by school. Where possible we have included the date they were established. If you click on their names you will be immediately transported to their websites.
