The following are a few of the things that I have done to create a family literacy
awareness outside the walls so our VOICE can be heard!
At the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year, I wanted to create a name for our school library that reflected
what we are all about. VOICE is the word that describes what is happening the best at Van Meter within and outside
of the library. I want to create an atmosphere where our students can be heard through inquiring, sharing,
connecting, listening, creating, learning, and teaching. An active place that inspires our students and
teachers. And also which reaches outside the walls of our library and into our community and beyond.
I have created the Van Meter Library VOICE Google Site, which holds a wealth of
information for literacy, technology, Web 2.0, research, professional resources, and much more.
This has become the VOICE of the library not just within the walls of our school but for people all over the world.
A great way to show the families, community, and world what is happening within our libraries and share
ideas is through the Van Meter Librarian YouTube Channel. We do a lot of interactive, technology based
literacy activities which I then turn into YouTube videos to place on our channel.
I have created two blogs for the Van Meter library.
The Van Meter Library VOICE (for secondary) and Van Meter Elementary Library VOICE for secondary.
This is a fun and interactive way to share literacy and technology with our community and world.
