12 Noon EST, Saturday, Aug. 27, 2011 UPDATE: The UNCW campus continues to assess damage and restore services after Hurricane Irene. The campus curfew will be lifted and students may leave the residence halls at 12 noon. The campus will reopen at 2 p.m., with services available in Randall Library, Fisher Student Center, Fisher University Union and Wagoner Dining Hall. Campus Dining will provide food services for students on campus.
The Emergency Operations Center is conducting building assessments and responding to reports of downed trees, power outages and roof leaks. Leak repair and removal of trees and limbs is taking place to prepare for the 2 p.m. opening of campus. Students are asked to only go to those buildings on campus that have reopened with services, and to use caution when traveling on and off campus. Please limit travel in order to ensure your safety and not hamper assessment and recovery efforts taking place on campus and throughout the county.
Irene is now a Category 1 storm with winds of 85 mph over Pamlico Sound. Gale force winds continue to occur on campus with gusts to tropical storm force. Winds will diminish now through 3 p.m., with scattered rain expected through 2 p.m. UNCW received about 6 inches of rain. Approximately 20 trees were downed, with 60 trees damaged and numerous major limbs fallen.
Students, faculty and staff should anticipate that classes and offices will operate on a normal schedule Monday, Aug. 29.
