Welcome to the University of Maryland (UM) Chapter of Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society. The UM chapter encompasses all campuses within the University System of Maryland, and includes friends from related institutions, agencies and corporations within Maryland and the metropolitan Washington DC area.
Sigma Xi is an international honorary research society with over 65,000 members worldwide. Sigma Xi members can be found in virtually every branch of academia, government and industry, and are active in a broad range of activities from local science fairs to deciding issues of political importance relating to research. Sigma Xi also publishes American Scientist six times a year and provides student research funding through its Grants-in-Aid of Research program.
Membership in Sigma Xi is by invitation. Those who have shown potential as researchers are invited to join as associate members. Full membership is conferred upon those who have demonstrated noteworthy achievements in research. Each year the Society initiates nearly 5,000 new members. Over the course of the Society's distinguished history, more than 200 members have been awarded the Nobel Prize and many more have earned election to the National Academies of Sciences and Engineering.
