M.Gorky Donetsk National Medical University (DNMU)
, established in 1930 is one of the largest and best medical universities of the former USSR. Since then, over 40,000 highly skilled doctors, well known scientists, researchers, health service organizers from Ukraine, Russia, other European countries, Asian, African and American countries have graduated from DNMU.

By studying at DNMU, students gain their professional experience at 26 specialized bases-multifield medical and preventive organizations and research institutes and 28 specially equipped clinical bases-leading city hospitals, under the supervision of experienced specialists.

There are two scientific research institutes:the Institute of Medical Family Problems and Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics. DNMU has Pre-Medical courses in the Preparatory Faculty, Graduate Degree in Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy and Post-Graduate Medical specialization Degrees.

The Preparatory Faculty
prepares the students for the Medical Degree course. The course covers and gives knowledge to the students for all the subjects necessary for continuing their education into the Medical Degree Program. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be eligible to join the Degree course in Ukraine, Russia and other CIS countries.

The duration of the Medical Degree program is 6 years. During the first 2 years, students acquire knowledge in various fundamental medical subjects like anatomy, histology, physiology, microbiology, biochemistry etc. From the 3rd academic year, they start their training at the clinical departments of therapy, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, infectious diseases, endocrinology, opthalmology, skin diseases etc.

After 6 years of studies at DNMU, the graduates are warded with a GP-Specialist Degree. For the last 10 years, M.Gorky Donetsk National Medical University has been the leader in Ukraine in the training of medical graduates.


The duration of the Under-Graduate degree program in Dentistry is for 5 years. During the last five years, DNMU has been the leading university in Ukraine in training Dentists.

In the 1st year, students acquire knowledge in fundamental medical subjects like anatomy, physiology, biochemistry etc. 

From the 2nd year they study specialized disciplines and start practicing their first manipulations on waxworks and models. Later on, they master the modern methods of diagnostics and treatment of children and adult dental diseases. The students are taught to rehabilitate the teeth and tooth rows with the help of composite rehabilitation materials, metal-ceramic and ceramic prosthetic appliances. They master the art of surgery in the oscular cavity, on face and neck. They get comprehensive knowledge in Orthodontics. After 5 years of training, the graduates are awarded with the Degree of a Dentist.

After completing their internship or special clinical courses they obtain specialization in Preventive Dentistry, Operative Dentistry, Prosthetic Dentistry, Pediatric Dentistry etc.

The duration of studies of the Degree in Pharmacy is 5 years. The Pharmaceutical Faculty at DNMU is one of the most attractive and prospective faculties for Ukrainian and foreign students. 

In the 1st three years at the University, the students study fundamental medical subjects as well as medical botany, pharmacognosia, medicaments technology, pharmaceutical and toxicological chemistry clinical pharmacy etc. During the 4th and 5th years they specialize in pharmacy, complete the practice period at pharmaceutical enterprises. 

After completing their education at DNMU, the graduates obtain a Degree of Pharmaceuticals and Certificates in their chosen specializations like Small scale production of medicaments, Medicative plants and phytotherapy, quality control , Organization & regulation of the Pharmaceutical Enterprises etc.


Donetsk lies in the steppe landscape of Ukraine, surrounded by scattered woodland, hills (spoil tips), rivers, and lakes. The northern outskirts of the city are mainly used for agriculture. The Azov Sea, 95 km south of Donetsk, is a popular recreational area for those living in Donetsk. A wide belt of farmlands surrounds the city.
The city stretches 28 km from north to south and 55 km from east to west. There are 2 nearby reservoirs: Nyzhnekalmius and the "Donetsk Sea", 5 rivers flow through the city, including the Kalmius, Asmolivka (13 km), Cherepashkyna (23 km), Skomoroshka, and Bakhmutka. The city also contains a total of 125 spoil tips.
Donetsk's climate is moderate continental. The average temperatures are −5 °C (23 °F) in January and18 °C (64 °F) in June. The average number of rainfall per year totals 162 days and up to 556 millimetres per year.

The city is an important center of heavy industry and coal mines in the Donets Basin (Donbas) and Ukraine. 

Donetsk's economy consists of about 200 industrial organizations that have a total production output of more than 5 billion hryvnias per year and more than 20,000 medium-small sized organizations. The city's coal mining industry comprises 17 coal mines and two concentrating mills; the metallurgy industry comprises 5 large metallurgical plants located throughout the city; the engineering market comprises 67 organizations, and the food industry — 32 organizations.

DNMU has been recognized as the best training methodical center among Ukrainian Medical Universities from 2001-2011 and was awarded with the Diplomas of Ukrainian Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education and awarded the status of a NATIONAL UNIVERSITY.

DNMU is listed both in the WHO Directory of Medical Schools & the US IMED. 

DNMU also follows the systems established at the Bologna Process  by the Council of Europe and members of the Europe Region of UNESCO

According to the Ministry of Health of Ukraine order no.148 of March 22, 2004 DNMU has been appointed to be the primary Regional Center of Bologna Process in Ukraine. DNMU students will be able to study various academic modules at practically any European Medical University and after getting the Specialist degree, they will have very attractive employment prospects.

From 2005/06 academic year, DNMU started teaching according to the Bologna Agreement on specialists training using the credit-modular system, and upon completion of their education, the students will obtain the Specialist Degrees according to the European Standards.

Research is crucial to the culture of enquiry within DNMU and to the quality of our teaching. The University's Graduate school provides a focus for post-graduate and research activity including the provision for help and administrative support for post-graduate research students. 

Research is organized within the university through its research institutes and centers where staff supervise research students on topics related to their research work. Research institutes and centers also provide services to external clients and organizations enabling students to benefit from a particularly high level of expertise in each area. Some research students also work within the university's academic departments.


At DNMU there are 3 hostels for foreign students. In each hostel, a single block consists of 3 or 4 rooms. The rooms can accommodate 2 or 3 students. In every hostel there is a prayer room for Muslim students. At a little distance from the University campus is located an Indian temple. Churches are also very common in Donetsk.

There are 4 libraries in the University and 5 reading halls. Library and reading halls are also located in hostels.

The University campus consists of three buildings with 10 auditoriums for 200-300 students each, 100 study rooms and 37 computer classes, scientific training library departments, 9 hostels with reading and sport rooms, sanatorium-preventorium, stadium, sport and recreation complex, students club, dining room, cafe, first aid center. There is a sport and recreation camp on the bank of Severskiy Donetsk.
The administration and study buildings as well as the campus are situated on the left side of Kalmius river, which is almost in the center of Donetsk.


Sport is very important to DNMU and currently DNMU is the top university for sport in Ukraine, particularly foodball, tennis and table tennis and other sports league tables and competitions. There is a huge range of different sports and leisure activities available which you can pursue either at competition level or just for fun.

DNMU is also one of the top Universities in Ukraine for tennis, basketball, table tennis and foodball. DNMU competes locally and nationally in a wide range of competitive sports. Students can use the DNMU gym facilities and fitness centers for a nominal fee. The gym and fitness center includes modern equipment and host regular classes.

Some of the sports and leisure activities include Atheletics, Hip Hop Aerobics, Squash, Badminton, Hockey, Swimmng, Karate, Tang Soo Do, Netball, tennis, Cricket, Basketball, Judo, Table tennis, Cross Country Rugby, Volleyball, Football, Salsa, Yoga etc.

Students are advised to start their application processing in January for the Under-Graduate Academic year starting from September. DNMU being a premier university in Ukraine has only limited seats and students apply from all over the world quickly filling up the seats every year.
