As non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, United Mountain Defense absolutely depends on the involvement-and contributions- of community members and concerned citizens.
UMD is all-volunteer, staffed by scientists, lawyers, local business owners, parents and activists who perform all aspects of running a non-profit without compensation for their time and efforts. That's how we want it- low overhead means UMD is a uniquely ACTIVE organization- we don't wait around for things to happen, we make things happen.
Your donations primarily fund UMD's ongoing testing and monitoring efforts, especially paying for testing bottles, sample shipping, and analytical services. Donations also allow us to maintain our field equipment (see below) and keep reagents, standards, filters and batteries in stock and ready to use. Contributions also allow us to fuel our vehicles and visit the field for longer periods- and more often.
Our most important tools? Digital cameras and field notebooks.
UMD has the capability to take and test water, soil, and air samples- anywhere, anytime. We employ Airmetrics air samplers, Caliber Analytical Services for our in-depth chemical analyses, YSI sensors, instruments, and data collection platforms for environmental water quality monitoring and field testing, and Lamotte kits for limited field chemical testing.
UMD also collects and processes geographic information into original map products using Garmin and Trimble GPS units mapping software including ESRI ArcGIS, Google Earth Pro, Quantum GIS and MapWindow GIS.
