About Student Senate

The UMDNJ Student Senate was established in May of 2009 to advocate key student issues at the level of central administration and to foster a sense of collaboration and unity on multiple levels within students across the university.

As the official voice of all UMDNJ students, we hope to initiate direct dialogue with the highest echelons of university administration including President, Provost and Board of Trustees on issues ranging from tuition to financial aid to student life etc. We also hope to assist in the expansion of community service projects statewide through multidisciplinary collaboration. We urge you to join our cause.

A little background info -- The UMDNJ Student Senate brings together student leaders of all 8 of the UMDNJ sister schools [NJMS, NJDS, GSBS, SHRP, SON, SPH, RWJMS & SOM] to create change on issues that affect students across the university. The Senate consists of five committees: University Affairs, Academic Affairs, Legislative Affairs, Internal Affairs and Community Service. Each committee has a number of subcommittees and initiatives. All of them need your activism, service and leadership.

If you'd like to join a committee, sub-committee, or help out with an existing initiative, please do not hesitate to message the relevant committee chairs and chief officers of the Senate. We can be easily contacted at umdnjsenate@gmail.com.

Committee information:

 Academic Affairs (AA)
Senate Academic Affairs deals with issues such as academic integrity policies, interprofessional grand rounds, school absence policies, encouraging student research and cross-disciplinary collaboration, recognizing excellence in teaching at UMDNJ and more.

Community Service (CS)
Senate Community Service is committed to initiating cross-disciplinary service projects across UMDNJ and propelling existing service projects to the next level with UMDNJ-wide student and administrative support.  The CS committee recently expanded the Knit-a-Square project from NJMS to a University-wide platform with great success (over 2000+ donated squares). Community Service also raised hundreds of dollars for Hurricane Sandy relief.

Internal Affairs (IA)
Senate Internal Affairs identifies and promotes best practices for the Student Senate and proposes changes to its Constitution. This committee’s work determines, among other things, how your representatives (Senators) are chosen, in what capacities students can participate in their student government, in what manner the Senate will request funding through student activities fees, how the Student Senate will be accountable to the student body, and how labor is to be divided over the issues that the Student Senate deals with. We need your help to make the Student Senate more representative of UMDNJ students and more effective in advocating for you.

University and Legislative Affairs (UA & LA)
This joint committee deals with university and student issues such as tuition rates and policy, financial aid, U. environmental policy, alumni engagement, public safety and more.  The legislative aspects of this committee focus on highlighting the impact of UMDNJ on New Jersey and its citizens to state legislators.  Its purpose is two-fold: first, show the student side of UMDNJ to New Jersey's legislators and, secondly, to provide an opportunity for UMDNJ students to develop vital political advocacy skills.
