UM:Autonomy is an award winning, undergraduate team from the University of Michigan. Every year we build an autonomous boat to participate in the AUVSI (Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International) Foundation Roboboat competition. The boat, which is completely designed and programmed by the students, must complete a wide range of challenges that are designed to expose students to the many difficulties of autonomous operation.
The 2016 competition challenges included buoy channel navigation, target detection and automated docking, acoustic beacon detection, and an interoperability component. Our boat, Thurman, performed reasonably well, acquiring 6th place in the competition. Although we would have liked to place higher, the team gained a lot of experience and we are looking forward to apply this knowledge to next year's competition and beyond.
