Welcome!

Ulriken Janitsjar is a wind concert band for children and young adults in Bergen, the capital of "The Fjords of Norway". Ulriken is also the name of the highest of the mountains surrounding our city.

The band recruits its musicians from four schools; Slettebakken, Fridalen, Nattland and Sædalen. All together we have about 100 members, aged 8-19 years; Recruits, Junior Band and Main Band.

Band rehearsal and individual music lessons are given weekly to all our members, guided by our three conductors and 15 coaches.

We believe that musical quality are closely related to individual development, teamwork and common spirit. We therefore emphasize spending much time together. Several times each year we organize weekend musician seminars, with plenty of musical and social activities.

The Main Band continuously strives to reach higher musical levels. Many of the musicians, aged 12-19 years, are very dedicated musicians who play in several bands. The band has various sections including woodwinds, different brass instruments, melodic percussion, timpanis and other percussion.

The band has performed pieces such as "Paganini Variations" by Philip Wilby, “Chivalry” by Martin Ellerby, Jean Sibelius’ “Finlandia”, movie music as “Pirates of Carribean”, “Lion King”, “Children of Sanchez”, and more funky stuff as Stevie Wonders “Sir Duke”.

The band has taken part in many competitions both locally and nationally, and has achieved excellent results. Ulriken Janitsjar has won the Norwegian championship three times. The band has also performed at "Music from the North" in Italy, Scarborough Music Festival in United Kingdom and Tallinn, Estonia.

Ulriken Janitsjar was established in 1997, and in 2012 we are celebrating our 15 year anniversary.
