My main interests are in theoretical ethics, especially in theories of practical reasons, and in normative ethics. I am currently working on a number of papers on the relation of values and reasons, and on a range of problems in normative ethics (paradox of deontology; voluntary obligations, such as promissory obligation; the significance of intentions). I am also interested in action theory, moral psychology, political philosophy and philosophy of law.

Before I came to Leeds (in 2004) I was an Assistant Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, and held a number of visiting positions and research fellowships both in the US and in the UK. In 2008/9, I was a faculty fellow of the Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics at Harvard University.

In 2007-8, and from 2009-11, I was the Director of the Centre for Ethics and Metaethics (CEM) at Leeds.
