Welsh Varsity plus

A brisk wind greeted sailors from Cardiff and Swansea gathered at Tata Sailing Club for the annual Welsh Varsity Match. The general opinion was that this would be an easy Cardiff win but that was not to be the case.

In the best of 11 race series Swansea opened with a 1, 4, 5 win. Cardiff then came back to even the score and with a further two wins take a good 3:1 lead. However, Swansea got another win to make it 3:2. A quick swim by a Swansea boat on the run gave Cardiff another win with a 1, 3, 5 to make the overall score 5:2. Cardiff needed only one more race to take the win, but Swansea came back with a commanding 1, 2, 3 followed by a 1, 2, 5. Then, when a gybeback at mark 3 produced a tangle between the boats involved, it was Swansea that emerged with the advantage and suddenly the series was tied at 5:5 and we were facing a sudden death final race.

Unfortunately, it was Cardiff (photo) who came off the line with a solid 1, 2  so we missed out on the excitement of a battle as they sailed away, preserving their lead to finish with a 1, 2, 5 and take the Welsh Varsity Sailing Match 6:5. Both teams then proceeded to Swansea for the rest of the Varsity Matches (Rugby seemed to feature prominently) and no doubt a little partying.

I have had a reminder that the Firefly Nationals are at Abersoch this year from July 28- Aug 3. There is discounted entry for Under 25yr olds and a prize for the first institution boat among many other opportunities to win things. Additional discounts are available until May 1st so get your act together over the weekend. Apart from this being a great social event, a week of fleet sailing is a great way for team racers to improve their boatspeed and you would be surprised how much easier maneuvers become if you have boatspeed.
