The Office of the City Auditor for the City and County of Honolulu
The Office of the City Auditor for the City and County of Honolulu is seeking an intern who is either a
Junior, Senior, Graduate Student, or recent graduate of programs related to Business Administration,
Accounting, Auditing, Public Administration, Public Policy, Political Science, Economics, Urban Planning,
Social Sciences, or related fields. The intern will work on audit projects related to benchmarking and
measuring the performance of the city and county, its departments, and compiling resident perspectives
of city and county services. This is a unique opportunity for students to expand their knowledge of city
and county government.
At the conclusion of the program, the successful applicant will have a finalized product for his or her
professional portfolio, a letter of recommendation, and a certificate of completion. The applicant’s level of
responsibility during this project will reflect his or her skills, abilities, and professional experience. The
applicant will work under the supervision of a senior audit manager.
The City Auditor’s Office will select an intern for the program who will perform a single audit project over
the course of 6 months (subject to availability of funds). Interns must be willing to see the project through
to completion and commit to a minimum of 12 hours per week. In consultation with his or her senior audit
manager, the intern will determine his or her work schedule.
Applicants must meet the following requirements.

The intern’s responsibilities are listed below.
Pay Rate: $18.39 per hour

• Be available to work 12 to 19 hours a week for at least 6 months (subject to availability of funds);
flexible hours can be arranged around school schedule;
• Be proficient in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Power Point) and familiar with Adobe
• Have an interest in or experience with statistical sampling and survey analysis methods;
• Be well-organized and attentive to accuracy and details;
• Must have excellent oral and written command of English;
• Be self-motivated and a self-starter with minimal guidance and direction;
• Be comfortable with interviewing department heads, working with department staff, and working in a
team environment;
• Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation;
• Be able to provide a writing sample; and
• Provide a minimum of 3 academic and/or professional references and pass a background check.

• Interact with multiple levels of local government and interview department heads and their staff;
• Gather and analyze information about department operations to identify benchmarking and
performance measures, potential audit issues, and related audit work;

• Review, analyze, and compile large volumes of information and prepare tables and charts that allow
objective evaluations of government performance and operations;
• Prepare written reports related to the audit project results;
• Communicate in writing and verbally the results of their analysis, conclusions, and findings to city
managers; and
• Assist with administrative duties as assigned.

Duties/Experience/Skills Required:



Under the direction of the Assistant Controller, performs general clerical duties relating to general accounting and accounts receivable.



Accounting (100%)

  • Posts and reconciles journal vouchers, cash receipts, subsidiary ledger, and other accounting data.
  • Maintains aging accounts receivables and contacts customers regarding collection.
  • Assists in the customer service department entering sample and donations to the accounting database.
  • Provides various accounting reports. 



  • Assists with special projects related to accounting functions.
  • Performs all duties and maintains all standards in accordance with company policies and procedures.


  • AA degree in accounting or other equivalent accounting courses/training and experience.
  • At least one (1) year general accounting experience, including work with computerized accounting systems, preferably Great Plains.
  • Working knowledge of MS Excel and Word.
  • Good verbal and interpersonal skills.
