Ramesh Jain Graduate Student Lounge

The graduate student lounge is located on the 3rd floor of Jacobs Hall (EBU-1  Rm 3327 ). The lounge was extensively upgraded and remodeled with generous funding from Prof. Ramesh Jain, and is maintained by the ECE Graduate Student Council using fees from ECE graduate students. There is a dining table, microwave, and refrigerator, as well as couches, a TV, a foosball table, a ping-pong table, and a dart board. You can get access by swiping your student ID if you are a current ECE graduate student.  If you have any trouble gaining access, please contact one of our lounge chairs (found on our list of ECE GSC officers).

Conditions of access

  • You agree to use the lounge with respect (cleaning up after yourself, putting away furniture, etc.).
  • You agree not to provide access to others (propping the door open, sharing ID cards, etc.).
  • You may not remove anything from the lounge.
  • The door keeps track of ID numbers and access times, and if there is a problem these records may be used to discover who was responsible. You acknowledge that you're aware we may check the lounge access history.
  • If you violate these conditions, we may revoke your lounge access.

Lounge access for non-ECE graduate students

Although the ECE graduate student lounge is meant for use by ECE graduate students only (since funding for the lounge comes directly from their student fees), every year we get a few requests for access by non-ECE graduate students who work in Jacobs Hall. Ordinarily non-ECE graduate students would not be allowed lounge access since they don't contribute to maintaining the lounge. However, as a goodwill gesture toward these students and in support of multidisciplinary research, non-ECE graduate students may gain access by contributing a $5 yearly fee for lounge maintenance (comparable to the fee we get from ECE graduate students).

To get access if you're a non-ECE grad student, you will need to:

  • fill out an application form
  • write a $5 check payable to our current treasurer
  • Drop off the check and application form to the mailbox of our current lounge chair
  • Email the treasurer and lounge chair so they know to check for your application
  • (Names and contact info of our current lounge chair and treasurer found on our list of ECE GSC officers)
The lounge chair will give your ID card access to the lounge within a few days.  Access will be for the remainder of the academic school year until we update the list of ID cards, usually at the beginning of October.

Duration of access

The $5 fee gives you access to the lounge for an entire academic school year, until we update the list of ID cards around the beginning of October.  If you apply later in the school year, your fee will be reduced by $0.42 per month, rounded to the nearest month.  For example, if you apply for access on November 10th, you'd pay for 11 months, so your fee would be $4.48.

  • If you violate these conditions, we may revoke your lounge access without refund.
  • Duration of access is until the beginning of the next academic year.
These non-ECE access conditions are experimental, and if there is a problem, the ECE Graduate Student Council retains the right to change its policies for non ECE graduate students at any time.  The ECE Graduate Student Council retains the right to revoke access for any reason and without refund at any time.
