News and Updates

July 2015: Opportunities for graduate studies at the Universidad de Costa Rica.

Currently, we are working on several new project themes that will offer graduate student opportunities in the area of plant disease epidemiology. These topics include:

1) Empirical and theoretical studies to further understanding of the epidemiology of the Black Sigatoka-banana system.

2) Modeling of the risk of virus epidemics through a more complete understanding of insect vector dynamics in horticultural crops like tomato and sweet pepper.

For more information about the graduate program at the Universidad de Costa Rica, please consult:

1) Sistemas de Estudios de Posgrado, Universidad de Costa Rica

Please note that you will need to have a strong working knowledge of both Spanish and English for these projects.

For specific questions related to the different project opportunities, please contact me directly at: paul.esker@ucr.ac.cr.

April 2015: The First International Summer in Plant Disease Epidemiology, held in Raipur, India, was a success with approximately 60 participants from all over India. As part of this educational project, we have developed a web page related to those activities, including thematic information available in PDF. Feel free to take a look and let us know what you think!

March 2015: In collaboration with colleagues from INRA (France), Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, UC-Davis (USA), Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya (India), IRRI, and the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (Italy), we will teaching the Summer School in Plant Disease Epidemiology at Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya. The application process is now closed, but we very much look forward to working with a great group of students and researchers related to different themes in the area of plant disease epidemiology. If you are interested in learning more about the program, please contact me using the "Contacto/Contact" form.

December 2014: In January, we welcome Drs. Serge Savary and Laetitia Willocquet to UCR to present a 4-day workshop on using simulation modeling to study concepts in plant disease epidemiology and crop loss assessment. For further information, please check here.

August 2014: The 2014 Annual APS-CPS Conference in Minneapolis, MN, was a success in that the Universidad de Costa Rica was well represented, not just for those based here in Costa Rica but also those who are alumni of the program and either continuing their studies abroad, or in new (or old) positions in academia. For more information regarding the conference, please check here.
