1 Gbps internet speeds from outdated infrastructure?

As companies such as AT&T, Verizon, and Time Warner look to ways of slowing the buzz about Google Fiber has Google decided to change its mind about seeking possible acquisitions of dark fiber optic networks?

One of the questions that Google will need to answer is can they provide the touted fast internet services of 1 gigabit per second speed with updates to infrastructure that exists in the ground already only by utilizing upgrades it can install and will it be profitable?

Will Google be required to lay its own fiber optik lines?

If Google is required to lay its own fiber optic circuits it may decide to allow other companies that are already investing millions of dollars into infrastructure to complete the work and then enter the market as a purchaser later.

Whether old fiber optic telephone lines originally dedicated to businesses and larger developments can be successfully transformed by Google remains to be seen, but competitors understand that Google is not just playing tiddlywinks with the idea of a nation wide fiber backbone and must be reckoned with when market share considerations are made.
