Current practice times are Tuesdays from 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM and Saturdays at 10 AM - noon at the UCLA Wooden Center.
The UCLA Shinkendo Club will be transitioning its website to:
Tuesday practice is being moved to Mondays at 4 PM outside near the Bruin statue. On Tuesdays, Sensei is coming from work and cannot always be on time, so please meet at the Bruin statue, find a suitable space to train, and warm up until Sensei arrives and class begins.
Saturday practices will continue unchanged at 9 AM in the Wooden Center Blue Room.
We have been invited to train at Honbu Dojo with Kaiso and Soke Obata this Sunday. This is a special opportunity and is highly recommended to students. We will also get a chance to meet the USC group and have lunch afterwards.
Class resumes this Saturday with prospective students invited to attend. Come check out Shinkendo!
After a great summer with two practice days in the Wooden Center, we're back to only one practice in the Blue Room on Saturdays at 9:00 AM. We'll continue to practice on Tuesdays at 4:00 PM, at a soon to be announced outdoor location on campus.
UCLA Shinkendo will be holding practices on Saturdays from 9:00 to 10:30 AM in the Blue Room in the John Wooden Center. Our first practice will be this Saturday, the 11th.
Interested students are encouraged to come to practice for a free sampling before paying the club dues - just send us an e-mail notifying us that you'll be joining us and wear athletic clothing to practice.
If you're sure that you want to be a part of the club, you can pay our club fee and the club sports fee through the UCLA recreation website. More details instructions can be found here.
It's been a long journey starting up our own Shinkendo Club Sport here at UCLA, and I do apologize that practices were delayed until the second quarter. But we invite all students to come join us as we study and practice the Shinkendo way of Japanese swordsmanship!
It's been quite a journey, from when we first decided to start a Shinkendo student group, to the first day of practice as an official club sport. But that day is finally here, Sensei Pierre is officially approved to be our instructor. Unfortunately, the process took the entirety of the fall quarter. However, I am pleased to announce that we will be holding our first practice on Saturday, 12/14/13 in the blue room at 9 AM. Any students who are still around are welcome to join us! We will have tryout waivers for you to sign and extra bokken, so all you need to prepare is some athletic clothing. For those who are interested but can't make it, don't fret! We will be resuming practices in the Winter quarter of 2014 at the same time.
It's taken almost 7 weeks, but UCLA Shinkendo is finally cleared to practice in the Wooden Center. Unfortunately, we are not permitted to hold practices without a certified Shinkendo instructor on the premises, so until Sensei Pierre is approved by Wooden we will not be meeting. Mr. Zeck from UCLA Club Sports has reassured me that this process should be completed within the next 2 weeks. We hope to hold at least one practice before the end of the Fall Quarter.
Practices at the Heroes Golf Course are cancelled this week and next week. They will resume on the 22 of October. We will try to get on-campus practices going ASAP.
Unfortunately, we've been informed that the human resources department for club sports is painfully slow. In addition, they'll be doing our paper work extra carefully to make sure nothing goes wrong the first time around. We're told that we will be able to officially start practicing around 6th week. Until that time, we will be continuing practices at the Japanese Gardens at the Heroes Golf Course. See the 'Practice' page for details.
We've successfully established practice times twice a week that work for Sensei Pierre:
Friday 3:30 - 5:00 PM in the Gold Room
Saturday 9:00 - 10:30 AM in the Blue Room
Once our safety officers are trained and Sensei Pierre is approved to instruct our club within the John Wooden Center, we'll be able to start holding practices. Our goal is to start next Friday, the 11th of October. Stay tuned for confirmation that it'll be happening!
We're proud to announce Shinkendo's officers for the coming academic year:
President: Eric Hsu
Vice President: Benjamin Kartub
Treasurer: Donovon Guadagnin
The Fall General Assembly will take place in the John Wooden Center this coming Wednesday, mandatory for the main officers of each club sport. At this meeting, we'll discuss general rules and policies for each club, as well as officer training sessions for treasurer and safety officers. After the meeting we'll be one step closer to holding our own practices.
Want to get more involved with UCLA's martial arts program? Looking for some leadership experience to put on your resume? Our club is currently seeking motivated students to fill the position of Safety Officer.
At least one safety officer is required to be present at each practice, to ensure that practice is proceeding in a safe manner. Are you a Pre-med? As a safety officer, you will become CPR certified and an expert in administering first aid.
Of course with any officer position, it will require some time and commitment. But it can be extremely rewarding. If interested, please contact the UCLA Shinkendo club at email@example.com.
Welcome to the temporary website of the Shinkendo Club at UCLA.
The Shinkendo Club officially became part of the UCLA Club Sports program on September 19, 2013. Shinkendo functions as an independent club sport, as well as a subgroup of the UCLA Japanese Martial Arts Club. This site will serve to provide club updates and practice times until we work out the logistics of making the club fully functional in mid October.
