The objective of our project was to evaluate the treatment outcomes of blood transfusions alone or in combination with diuretics in pediatric patients with severe anemia due to malaria at the PCEA Chogoria Hospital in Kenya. The ultimate goal was to obtain data to support the best means of treating severe malaria. We also developed an ongoing relationship with the hospital allowing for continued communication and joint efforts at improving health care in the region. The initial data was retrieved from hospital records in Kenya this summer and in upcoming months the data analysis will be completed. The opportunity exists for first year students to get involved with the next steps in this project, which will again occur onsite at the hospital in Kenya.
