Sociology: Fall 2014

 Fall 2014
Department of Sociology
Dear Sociology Alumni,

Your alumni legacy is more important than ever before. You are our ambassadors in the workplace and in your communities – you tell the story of your alma mater and serve as proof of its excellence every day.

As the fall semester gets underway, we are excited to share a few highlights from the Department of Sociology with you.
We now offer an accelerated BA/MA program that allows students to complete both degrees in five years.
The Sociology department now offers an Accelerated BA/MA program enabling our high-performing majors to complete both degrees in 5 years with 9 credits “double-dipping” toward both degrees.

For Fall 2014 we are excited to add a new undergraduate certificate: Social Dimensions of Health & Health Care to our existing Certificate in Criminology and Justice Studies and Certificate in Sociology of Diversity.

Sociology is proud to be the first (and currently the only) department in the college of LAS to offer Online Completion for our Bachelor of Arts degree. If students have completed 60 credits at UCCS, or transfer in with an AA, they will be able to complete their BA at UCCS in Sociology completely online. Our Online Completion program helps us reach out to military students (and others) who are unable to complete their degrees because of relocation/deployment.

We have been working hard to increase our service learning opportunities for students starting with the appointment of a new internship coordinator, Dr. Michèle Companion, and a new Sociology Internship course, which is now offered every semester for both undergraduates and graduate students. We have also added optional 1-credit internship “labs” to 15 different 3-credit themed courses.

The department has developed two new dual-degree programs that will make it easier for our undergraduates to pursue a double major. The first, between Sociology and Women’s and Ethnic Studies (WEST) starts in Fall 2014 and the second, between Sociology and Criminal Justice, should be in place by Spring 2015.

Our recent Masters graduates have gone on to Ph.D. programs at the University of Southern California, Cornell University, University of Colorado, Boulder and Colorado State University.

Our Masters program was accepted into the Western Regional Graduate Program
; a program that offers a reduction in the out-of-state tuition for students from participating western states.

Last year we participated in the creation of a new (interdisciplinary) Graduate Certificate in Disability Studies to add to our three existing ones: Graduate Certificate in Advanced Research Methods, Graduate Certificate in Diversity and Graduate Certificate in Teaching Sociology.

Our faculty member, Dr. Zek Valkyrie, was the recipient of the Innovations in Teaching with Technology Award in 2014 for his “gamification” teaching pedagogy. He utilizes a progression model based on the mechanics of video games to assess and motivate his students, going far beyond a standardized grading system.

Finally, over Summer 2014 we moved to the fourth floor of the new Academic Office Building. We invite alumni to come visit us and see our new space!

As UCCS approaches its 50th anniversary, we hope that you will join us in celebrating the UCCS legacy – both ours and yours. Your stories, your achievements, and your dreams are what make UCCS a truly amazing university.
