GOING ON A U3A TRIP - writing a cheque? Archived 13/2/17
If you are writing a cheque for a Westpm U3A trip then please ensure the payee is made out to "Weston S Mare U3A Social Account" or "WSM U3A Social Account" as our Bank is insisting on the correct payee details. If your cheque is refused you may not get on the trip you thought you booked.

We have a well-established group, which needs a LEADER.
This group has been running for years, meeting monthly, on the
first Sunday, and having lunch in pubs in the Weston area, all of which can be reached using local buses Can you help?   Contact Jenny Schofield if you would like to be the leader/Coordinator of this lovely group.

Archived 10/2/17
We have an active and friendly group, currently meeting on a Monday morning from 10 to 12 at the Friends Meeting House, and have recently increased our numbers due to the efforts of 2 of our members who have started a beginners’ group. This will finish in July with the beginners- being beginners no longer- having completed Book 2 of the BBC course and joining in with the main group.

Ken, who has taken the language sessions for many years, is leaving us at the end of the summer, due to family commitments, and unless we can find someone to lead the language sessions, we will have to drop our frequency from weekly to fortnightly, when we will continue to hold conversation sessions. So this is a plea for anyone with a good knowledge of Spanish to contact if you are interested.

We really want to hear from you if you or anyone you know may be interested. You would not have to do it every week but it would be helpful if it could be a minimum of once a month. We are always ready to try to swap weeks for planned holidays.

Sadly, Dennis Darling is standing down after 12 years as leader.
The group is flourishing and meets monthly on the second Thursday of the month at an outside venue (when weather permits) at 10.30am.
There is a programme arranged until November, and Dennis will give help and advice to anyone who feels they can take on the leader’s role.

Shirely James advises that usually at the first Tuesday coffee morning each month a raffle is held with proceeds going to Weston Hospice and most prizes are donated by U3A members.

Should you have anything you would like to give then please bring it along to any coffee morning held at the Friends Meeting House.

There are other worthy causes but since this very local hospice has touched the lives of many U3A members and their families it was thought to be the most appropriate beneficiary.

We pay the money raised into the nearby Hospicecare charity shop the same day and still record the amount in the original notebook started by U3A member Muriel McElroy. This book shows that she ran the raffle weekly from 1997–2006 then monthly until 2013 when we were asked to take over.

A donation of £60.00 was made to the Tsunami Quake fund in 2005 but the remainder has supported the Hospice

In all a grand total of almost £17000 has been raised by the raffle!

So many thanks to all of you who donate the prizes and buy the raffle tickets.

It has been pointed out that in fact Gordon Hobbs does most of the work in relation to running this fund raising raffle.
