Look no further than our speaker at the U3A August meeting for the doyen of the stage and theatre in South Africa today. U3A Helderberg is delighted to host Janice Honeyman, a household name, at the meeting to be held at the DR Church, Helderberg, 82 Firmount Road, Monte Sereno, Somerset West on 5 August, 2026, starting at 10.00 sharp.
Janice has worked in most genres of theatre, locally and abroad, for 60 odd years. Families are familiar with her pantomimes, but her work as a director extends from popular productions, opera, operetta, musicals, bawdy romps, children’s theatre, and educational drama to the great classics and plays that deal with a deep concern for social issues. She also likes transforming prose to drama.
She was a founder member, board member and director of the Market Theatre Company, and in the early days of TV in South Africa was a presenter on Bangalory Time, and her Tales from the Story Spaza Shop – original stories from Africa -- entertained children and adults alike.
Janice has directed several Athol Fugard plays in her career and worked with theatre luminaries such as Barney Simon and Mannie Manin. She speaks of her ‘school-going adventures’ and describes her situation as ’often “against all odds” and a bit of a misfit – and then discovering [her]enjoyment of this magical feeling of creativity … and later managing to articulate the thrill of being given the gift of theatre-making.’
Her award winning and distinguished career as one of South Africa’s leading theatre directors has seen her work on stages across the globe.
Take a bow Janice!!!
