U3A False Bay was founded by a small group of committed people following an inaugural meeting in Fish Hoek in June 2004. Existing members from Cape Town, who live in the Southern Peninsula, transferred and an influx of new members swelled the membership to over 900 in 2016.

On the third Wednesday of each month (excepting December), a general meeting is held at 9:30 in the Fish Hoek Civic Centre Hall, which all members and any members of the public may attend. Presentations are given by prominent speakers, often experts in their fields, on a wide variety of topics. These talks are open to members and to visitors for a nominal fee.

Members of U3As offer their services voluntarily. No financial reward is paid to any member for teaching or helping other members in any way nor are qualifications required - and none are given. Offers and suggestions for courses are always welcome.

Membership information

Membership fees at False Bay U3A are, wef 1 Jan. 2019, R40 per person per year which covers the cost of administration, communication, venue hire and other associated costs. The cost to attend a course is nominal, at the discretion of the course leader, and there may be small additional costs depending on the nature of the course.

A good introduction to the U3A is to attend one of the monthly general meetings where course lists and membership forms are available and you could meet fellow members.
