  9. A1. Our school spends only the 2nd half of the year on SS. Science is the 1st half. #OK2Ask #sschat
  10. @HowlingMonkey2 Greeting Karen! Yes, we are in the 90s up in PA. Not the norm. Hot! #OK2Ask
  11. A1 cont. Either class is only 30 minutes per day and every day. But if there is assembly or trip, SS is canceled. #OK2Ask
  12. Ruth here in NoVA...just got a rain shower to tone down the heat #OK2Ask
  13. Q2: Of the 7 main areas of SS (History, Geography, Civics & Gov, Econ, Soc, Psych, and Anthropology.), which do you teach the most? #OK2Ask https://t.co/pe6yISmmq0

  14. A2. Each grade is a bit different. In 5th we did Econ (BizTown) and US History. In 6th it is strictly Geography. #sschat #OK2Ask
  15. A2 cont - At our elem school the kids focus on history, geography, civics, and gov. The others are electives later. #sschat #eled #OK2Ask
  16. @moreruckus2 Me too! There is so much you can do to make it engaging and active for the kids. #OK2Ask
  17. Q3a: What are some social studies tools that you use to make the most of your limited time? #sschat #eled #midleved #OK2Ask https://t.co/EVrMG1jJ09
Q3a: What are some social studies tools that you use to make the most of your limited time? #sschat #eled #midleved #OK2Ask pic.twitter.com/EVrMG1jJ09
  18. @HowlingMonkey2 What level does mainly civics and econ? I find that true for 5th grade in our area and then again in 10th and 12th. #OK2Ask
  19. @MrsMHenning Plus there are some really great books that you can tie in! #Ok2Ask
  20. A3a - a favorite is Check123 History Resources in 3 minutes or less, you can’t beat 3 minutes :) #OK2Ask  http://www.check123.com/categories/history
  21. @moreruckus2 Very true! We are going to talk about that later :) #OK2Ask Can't wait to hear what you use.
  22. A3a - Another one Classhook - Watch TV Shows & Movie clips to learn content. Click the Social Studies tab. #OK2Ask  https://www.classhook.com/
  23. A3: I actually use books that can double as texts for Reading class. That way they can reinforce one another #OK2Ask
  24. A3a - It also helps me when I use ss text for reading. This collection has lots of SS topics to explore. #OK2Ask  http://www.teachersfirst.com/exclusives/moreless/librarian/index.cfm
  25. @HowlingMonkey2 I am not as familiar with that one. I will be researching later tonight ;) #OK2Ask
  26. A3: @RWTnow has the best interactive timeline for me. Very simple and easy to use #OK2Ask
  27. Check out this recent OK2Ask archive about 3 cool timeline tools (and learn how to use them)! #OK2Ask  http://www.teachersfirst.com/single.cfm?id=17760
  28. A3c - Gettysburg by the Numbers is another fav for many grades. Check out the many infographics #OK2Ask #sschat  http://www.teachersfirst.com/gettysburg/index.cfm
  29. A3c- CurriConnects Booklists. This is a great way to incorporate SS in other subjects & save time. #OK2Ask  http://www.teachersfirst.com/content/curriconnects.cfm
  30. A4 - Overall trend - Less time for SS (and science) more time given to Math and LA. #OK2Ask #sschat
  31. A4cont - NAEP survey stats show that only 45% of elementary students receive more than 2 hours of SS instruction per week! #OK2Ask #sschat
  32. A4 - At my own school, the current trend is splitting the year with science/ss instruction. Any other schools the same? #OK2Ask
  33. A4: really pushing the integrative aspect of social studies...cross-curricular projects focused on rea;-world issues and application #OK2Ask
  34. A5 - Since our state doesn’t include SS on state tests (yet) it takes a backseat. It's my favorite to teach. I wish I had more time. #OK2Ask
  35. @HowlingMonkey2 Yes that is the critical part integrate the SS into other areas, or cross-pollination. #OK2Ask. Same as Ruth was sharing about the reading.
  36. A5: the focus becomes only what is tested...connections and topics are left out #OK2Ask
  37. A6 - In one word - TIME! We are currently doing some SS and doing BizTown, kids love it and learn a lot of life skills with econ. #OK2Ask
  38. @SFLOK2Ask A6:Relevancy:Ss need to know why it's important to learn these things. Once you relate it to them personally they get it. #sschat
  39. @HowlingMonkey2 Yes and I find this sad. In real life they need to see connections Teaching to the test, doesn't prepare them for the future #OK2Ask #sschat
  40. @SFLOK2Ask Ex:My Grands didn't realize they were covered by the Bill of Rights because they are in middle school. I cleared that up immediately #sschat
  41. @DayCatherineM Hello! Relevancy is an excellent point. If you make it matter, they will remember. #OK2Ask
  42. A6: Content and Connections...helping inner city kids understand the importance of studying historical topics #OK2Ask
  43. A6 - We only have time now for BizTown because we are finished with yearly instruction for math. Kids relate to this because it is $ #OK2Ask
  44. Q7- The NCSS states that active learning is best practice for long-term retention, how do you provide active learning opportunities? #OK2Ask https://t.co/8m7QtFOnXy

  45. A7 - We use a lot of technology tools to provide active learning. One example is Globetracker -  http://www.teachersfirst.com/globetracker/episode-show.cfm . #OK2ask
  46. A7cont - Globetracker allows students to choose the next adventure, vote, participate in polls, and more. #OK2Ask
  47. A7- Check out these tools to differentiate all content areas in the BYOD Classroom, (more active learning) #OK2Ask  http://www.teachersfirst.com/spectopics/diffbyod.cfm
  48. @HowlingMonkey2 Oh I love tying in writing! They could use a simply blogging tool like @throwwwapp #OK2Ask
  49. @HowlingMonkey2 Excellent way to make it relevant and get them actively involved in the learning process! #OK2Ask
  50. Q8 - What are some of your favorite social studies tools to use to create projects or review material? #sschat #eled #midleved #OK2Ask https://t.co/Vv36TOb3W9

  55. A8: I would have students use EDpuzzle to create and annotate instructional videos for each other #OK2Ask
  56. A9 - Start with small and easy tools. For example, this 50 States unit is simple and SO useful #OK2Ask  http://www.teachersfirst.com/share/states/index.cfm

  60. @HowlingMonkey2 Karen I want to be a student in your SS class. It sounds like a blast! #OK2Ask
  61. A9: I would have teachers try Smithsonian's TweenTribune #OK2Ask
  62. A10. Top 2 goals: students retain "some" of what was taught and students grow to love SS. #OK2Ask
  63. A10. Have I met them? Ask me in a few weeks :) They have really taken to BizTown (civics) because they find it relevant! #OK2Ask
  64. A10 cont. I hope as they leave elem, they have grown to love SS. Then I will feel successful #OK2Ask
