#OK2Ask: Start a School Makerspace From Scratch (7.20.16)

Are you ready to start a school makerspace but don't know where to start? This Twitter chat shares ideas for the recipe to create a successful makerspace from scratch!

  1. .#OK2Ask I teach 3rd grade in Lancaster, PA. I'm also a contributor for @SFLK12 & a part-time instructor @millersvilleu
  2. I am a kindergarten teacher in NJ. Looking forward to the twitter chat on makerspaces.#OK2Ask
  3. I'm Karen in Waynesboro, VA. I am an instructional tech junky #ok2ask
  4. We encourage our #Ok2Ask #makerspace participants to follow each other as we wait a few minutes for everyone to join.
  5. ."Make" a free @TeachersFirst account if you won't have one already while we wait for our first #Ok2Ask question  http://bit.ly/TF_MembershipSignup
  6. @DebHickerson Hi all. I teach 5th grade in Middle Tennessee. I'm a TN State Teacher Fellow and STEAM enthusiast #ok2ask
  7. Welcome, everyone! Lets get started with our first question! We will use the Q1-A1 format using the hashtag #Ok2Ask
  8. I don't tweet at all so this is new for me. Any tips? #OK2Ask
  9. A flexible place where Ss convene to tinker, create, explore, build, & invent using various tools & materials - innovation station! #ok2ask
  10. .@kkmass You can tweet an answer to the questions we post & use the hashtag #Ok2Ask in your response. Feel free to join in when u r ready!
  11. @kkmass your answer to Q1 should start with s1 followed by your answer.
  12. s1: a place where students learn the process of creating and solving problems #Ok2Ask
  13. I would add to Karen's definition a place where the students feel safe to tinker, explore, problem solve etc. #OK2Ask
  14. A1.creation station, can be in a classroom or its own room, lots of materials, things to tinker with, noisy, lots of thinking#OK2Ask
  15. .@kkmass Excellent answer, Kathleen! You're doing fine in your first Twitter chat!
  16. A1.creation station, can be in a classroom or its own room, lots of materials, things to tinker with, noisy, lots of thinking #OK2Ask
  17. .@mom2teachk1 I like how you said about noise. Makerspaces should be a place for Ss to communicate and collaborate
  18. @mom2teachk1 true - part of the beauty is that it can be anywhere...that it creates a buzz #ok2ask
  19. #OK2Ask I read about the school that created a maker space in their foyer because they didn't have anywhere else
  20. .@DebHickerson Space is limited in many schools, and thats a creative way to "make" use of space!
  21. @DebHickerson how wonderful...that would set the perfect tone and invite people in to explore #ok2ask
  22. .@DebHickerson It would promote a school culture or making and a great way for the community to see the Ss working hard to solve problems
  23. .#OK2Ask Great responses to define a makerspace. Our second question this evening is related to our first question.
  24. #OK2Ask Could it be portable? Maybe build some type of cart that holds variety of materials and tools so it could be shared.
  25. I already have a maker space in my library. It is housed on 4 carts that I pull out of my office. #OK2Ask
  26. .@kkmass That's fantastic! You can share some glows & grows with us this evening #OK2Ask
  27. A2: As Einstein said, “Creativity is intelligence having fun!” It is inventing, growing, taking risks, discovering & problem solving #ok2ask
  28. .@mom2teachk1 Portable carts would be great so Ts & Ss can learn make in their classrooms. Easy to share materials
  29. A2. To show the value of thinking, exploring and creating in the learning process. #OK2Ask
  30. #OK2Ask A2: this is a room or space dedicated to creativity and getting messy
  31. A2: I want students to experiment and not be afraid to fail #OK2Ask
  32. Here is a great book@to@help you get started. The author is Laura Fleming. #OK2Ask https://t.co/hE6Ov9IGKj

  33. A2: It meets NGSS standards, is at the highest level of Bloom's taxonomy and develops persistence and problem solving. #OK2Ask
  34. A2: We r in a high-stakes testing data-driven environment. Lets have the students passion to make drive for once #OK2Ask
  35. Being willing to take risks, to persevere and to solve problems contribute to the growth mindset we want to have. #OK2Ask
  36. A general Ed classroom probably doesn't have enough space to house supplies so they are easily accessible #OK2Ask
  37. .@mom2teachk1 Growth mindset is huge! @moreruckus2 also shared about FAIL First Attempt In Learning #OK2Ask
  38. A2: enthusiastic and engaged students take responsibility for their own learning - let them grow with things they find interesting #ok2ask
  39. .@DebHickerson Especially in newer schools. The space seems to be shrinking in classrooms.
  40. One of the reasons to have a makerspace is to have a time when kids can be kids + have fun w/o the pressures of the curricula. #OK2Ask
  41. .@kkmass Exactly. And the 21st Century Skills learned will enhance the students with their "regular" curriculum.
  42. Bring back the block center in kinder! There is so much problem solving there #ok2ask
  43. We are halfway through our #Ok2Ask #makerspace session. Everyone is contributing fantastic responses!
  44. Lets move on to question three of our chat this evening. Q3: https://t.co/968hdTse8m
Lets move on to question three of our chat this evening. Q3: pic.twitter.com/968hdTse8m
  45. How do you make it happen when there are strict time guidelines for each subject and adminstrators doing walk throughs?
  46. .@krissymoritz They play it stays. So much research supporting making and playing in primary grades.
  47. How do you make it happen when there are strict time guidelines for curriculum and adminstrators doing walk throughs? #OK2Ask
  48. A3: #OK2Ask We already addressed many of the purposes, but what is the main objective you want to achieve?
  49. @mom2teachk1 #Ok2Ask Great question. Like technology, I don't think it should be separate. It should be embedded into our lessons/curriculum
  50. @mom2teachk1 I was wondering that too! Think I'm putting more centers in- add writing and admin b happy #ok2ask
  51. @mom2teachk1 many schools start with an afterschool club, see the positive results and expand #ok2ask
  52. .@HowlingMonkey2 @mom2teachk1 That's a great place to start. Or during lunch or a "flex" time if available #OK2Ask
  53. I have makerspace as an alternative to recess. My purpose is to give kids a chance to create and have fun. #OK2Ask
  54. .@kkmass What's your participation look like? Great response?
  55. A3: More often than not, the fast finishers of gifted Ss get to complete makerspace activities. Everyone should have a chance #Ok2Ask
  56. @BowerKM I agree that it should be available to all students. Do you give the students on participating or not? #OK2Ask
  57. A3: To stimulate problem-solving. To have a “no-pressure zone” that breeds the 21st Century 4Cs #ok2ask
  58. A4: @libmandu shared w/ me that the American Library Association:  http://ala.org/search-results … has great makerspace resources #Ok2Ask
  59. Here is a great article about a K-2 Maker Clubhttp://www.fractuslearning.com/2014/04/17/create-a-maker-club/ #ok2ask
  60. A4. I would love to have a dedicated room so students could have works in progress. If not, in the library. #OK2Aak
  61. A4: Libraries make great spaces for making with their space and it's a great place to organize resources #Ok2Ask
  62. I'm going to have a long reading list! Summer better get a little longer! 😉 #ok2ask
  63. A4: Luv the library for a space - libraries should be hub of a school. BUT if all I can have is a cart, I will make that work too! #ok2ask
  64. Since I don't have any dedicated space, the carts work well. Also can, over to classes to support Steam related projects. #OK2Ask
  65. .@HowlingMonkey2 COWS = Computers on Wheels MOWS = Makerspaces on Wheels!
  66. A4. I would love a dedicated room or space in my classroom for ongoing projects. #Ok2Ask
  67. A4: Many teachers keep the glue, scissors, & supplies hidden until needed. They should be accessible at all times for Ss #Ok2Ask
  68. We have about 15 minutes left with our #Ok2Ask time together! Lets move on to Q5!
  69. #OK2Ask we are starting one in a room we use for after school program and DARE officer has class in there teaching about drug awareness
  70. For #Ok2Ask Q5, lets get a bit more specific with our resources!
  71. A4: I keep all the supplies and extras in drawers where students can use whenever they need. They still ask for permission! #Ok2Ask
  72. A5. Variety of tools-scissors, glue, hammers, staplers, tape, twisty ties #OK2Ask
  73. Cool idea! @DebHickerson after school drug awareness and DARE combine with makerspace & keep kids off the street or bored after schl #ok2ask
  74. A5: As teachers, we are used to hanging onto everything "in case we need it some day." Everything is game for a #makerspace. #OK2Ask
  75. A5: Have students bring in recyclables like aluminum, cardboard, cereal boxes, cans, etc. #Ok2Ask
  76. A5: we did some great thinking activities with plastic cups #ok2ask
  77. I would say anything you can get you hands on! I have Legos, K'nex, puzzles, crayons and craft things like pipe cleaners. #OK2Ask
  78. A5: I would love to have a LEGO wall! Tomorrow we r having a session on Build w/ Chrome. Using virtual LEGOS! #Ok2Ask
  79. Put it out through your PTO that you was told stuff. But make sue you can store it! #OK2Ask
  80. Kinders have glue&scissors all time! ❤️ when they take project further than I even thought of it! Encouraging them all time #ok2ask
  81. .#OK2Ask, your question five responses are leading us right into question six! Q6: https://t.co/Ktbw8TqvV7

  82. A5. In K, we have all kinds of blocks in the block center, along with things like paper cups and toilet paper tubes. #OK2Ask
  83. A6: @DonorsChoose is a great resource, soliciting PTO help, & asking local businesses #Ok2Ask

  87. A6: we had great support fr community organizations (business group)...they seemed to understand the benefit - got money & supplies #ok2ask
  88. A6. My boys are grown so they "donated" their Legos and other items. #OK2Ask
  89. A6. You can find some items at the Dollar Store. #OK2Ask
  90. Need to get a hold of my sons k'nex! He's in college now but not sure he's giving them up! Lol  https://twitter.com/mom2teachk1/status/755929644939870208

  92. This encourages conversation. Amongst kids too! They need socialization! #ok2ask
  93. A6: Putting out lists on your blogs and social media accounts for resources helps! #Ok2Ask
  94. @krissymoritz Let's just say that my sons might not know that they donated the Legos. LOL
