Dr. Kimberley H. Burdett has been Percussion Director at Teays Valley High School since 1997. She instructs the Golden Sound of the Vikings marching percussion section, for which she also arranges the music, as well as the percussion ensemble. The marching percussion section has received numerous awards during Burdett’s tenure and been invited to perform as a clinic ensemble at both Ohio Wesleyan University and the Percussive Arts Society’s Ohio Day of Percussion, The concert percussion ensemble is a regular performer at The Ohio State University High School Percussion Ensemble Festival and OMEA Solo & Ensemble, where they consistently receive superior and excellent ratings, both for ensembles and soloists. While at Teays Valley, Dr. Burdett also directed the high school’s indoor drumline, Fiero, from 1999-2001 and Prominent Rendition’s show choir combo from 2006-2009. Since the fall of 2012, Dr. Burdett has served as the drill writer for the Golden Sound of the Vikings marching band.
From 2005-2015, Dr. Burdett served as percussion faculty at Ohio Wesleyan University, where she taught applied percussion lessons, percussion methods, marching band techniques, and directed the percussion ensemble. She was a regular performer at the department’s OWU/NOW new music festival, most recently in a percussion duo with Dr. David Wolf.
In addition to these teaching responsibilities, Burdett works as a freelance percussion instructor for Pickerington High School North and Gahanna Lincoln High School. Her private lesson students consistently receive superior and excellent ratings at OMEA Solo and Ensemble each year, are placed in All State ensembles, and in 2014 a private student won the Columbus Symphony Orchestra's Young Artist concerto competition. Burdett was also a founding director of the Greater Columbus Youth Percussion Ensemble (an auditioned group of outstanding high school percussionists in the area) and was lead director for the steel drum band component of the group.
Dr. Burdett received Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Music Education, Master of Music, and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from The Ohio State University, where her primary teachers were Susan Powell, Joseph Krygier, and Michael Bump. While at Ohio State, she performed with the Symphonic Band, Symphony Orchestra and Wind Symphony at the Ohio Music Education Association convention and the College Band Directors National Association conference. As a member of The Ohio State University Percussion Ensemble, Burdett performed at the OMEA conference, the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, and at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention, in addition to performing with renowned percussion soloists Michael Burritt, John Beck, Neil Grover, Linda Maxey, Anthony Cirone, Susan Powell and Joseph Krygier. Burdett has conducted the OSU percussion ensemble multiple times and performed twice as a featured soloist with the group on Daniel McCarthy’s Concerto for Marimba, Percussion and Synthesizers. Burdett also directed the steel drum band at OSU from 2001-2004. In 2002, Burdett participated in her first international performances at the Ameropa chamber music festival in Prague, Czech Republic.
