 $1           12 Jul 79              The L. C. Tabakea             Design is identical to Gilbert Islands Scott #283 except for the lack of the small silhoutte of Queen Elizabeth II on this stamp. The L.C. (Landing Craft) Tabakea is named after the Turtle God who is believed to support Banaba Island on his back. The craft is used to ferry passengers (up to 200) and freight (up to 22 tons) among the islets that make up the nation's capital, Tarawa.
