UNIT 9: THE POST OFFICE

PRONUNCIATION:

/sp/ : speak, speech, speedy, crisp, spacious

/st/: Stanley, stand, stop, best, text

/sk/: ask, disk, dusk, skill, school

GRAMMAR:

1. Defining relative clauses ( meänh ñeà quan heä xaùc ñònh)

Ex: I saw the man. He stole your bicycle.

" I saw the man who/that stole your bicycle.

2. Non-defining relative clauses ( meänh ñeà quan heä baát ñinh).

Tröôùc vaø sau meänh ñeà coù daáu phaåy vaø khoâng ñöôïc thay theá baèng that.

Ex: Mr Obama is the president of the U.S. He is very talented.

 "  Mr Obama, who is the president of the U.S, is very talented.

 

UNIT 10: NATURE IN DANGER

PRONUCIATION:

/sl/: slave, sleep, slim, slowly

/sm/: small, smart, smell, smoke

/sn/: snack, sneeze, snooker, snowy

/sw/: swallow, swim, swing, switch

GRAMMAR:

Relative clause after prepositions ( meänh ñeà quan heä sau giôùi töø)

Prepositions (after, about, in, at, on, with,…) + which (vaät), whom (ngöôøi)

Ex: My younger sister is innocent. My family is worried about her.

 "  My younger sister who/that/whom my family is worried about is innocent

 "  My younger sister about whom my family is worried is innocent

 

UNIT 11: SOURCES OF ENERGY

PRONUCIATION:

/r/: shred, shrill, shrimp, shrine

/spl/: splash, split, spleen, splutter

/spr/: spring, spray, spread, sprightly

GRAMMAR:

Relative clauses replaced by participles and to infinitive

1. Present participle phrase: which/that/who + clause " (ving)

Ex: The man who gave me a diamond ring was a director.

" The man giving me a diamond ring was a director.

2. Past participle phrase: which/that/who + clause " (v3/-ed)

Ex: The ideas that are presented in that book sound great.

" The ideas  presented in that book sound great.

3. An infinitive phrase: which/that/who + clause " to V

Ex: Yuri Gagarin was the first man who flew into space.

" Yuri Gagarin was the first man to fly into space.

 

UNIT 12: THE ASIAN GAMES

PRONUCIATION:

/str/: street, strong, strange, strength

/skr/: sream, screen, screw, scratch

/skw/: square, squeeze, squeak, squeal

GRAMMAR:

Omission of relative pronouns ( boû ñaïi töø quan heä khi noù laøm tuùc töø)

Ex: I am thinking of the woman who/that/whom I met at the park last Sunday.

" I am thinking of the woman I met at the park last Sunday.

 

UNIT 13: HOBBIES

PRONUCIATION:

/pt/: stopped, jumped, stepped, trapped

/bd/: robbed, stabbed, grabbed, bribed

/ps/: stops, steps, maps, shops

/bz/: robs, bribes, rubs, clubs

GRAMMAR:

Cleft sentences : It + is/was + S/O/Adverbialphrase + that/who ………………

1. Nhaán maïnh chuû töø

Ex: Mary sang very well at the party.

" It was Mary who sang very well at the party.

2. Nhaán maïnh tuùc töø

Ex: I learned Spanish last year.

" It was Spanish that I learned last year.

3. Nhaán maïnh traïng töø

Ex: I’m highly-respected in this organisation.

" It is in this organisation that I’m highly-respected.

 

UNIT 14: RECREATION

PRONUCIATION:

/ts/: sits, eats, meets

/dz/: reads, friends, kids

/tt/: marched, watched, reached

/dƷd/: bridged, raged, managed

GRAMMAR:

1. Cleft sentences : It + is/was + S/O/Adverbialphrase + that/who + be + V3/ed

(nhaán maïnh daïng bò ñoäng)

Ex: It is the girl who they really admire.

" It is the girl who is really admired.

2. Conjunctions (lieân töø keát caâu)

Not only + s/v/o/adv + but also + s/v/o/adv

Either + s/v/o/adv + or + s/v/o/adv

Neither + s/v/o/adv + nor + s/v/o/adv

Ex1: Jack doesn’t live in New York. Jim doesn’t live in New York, either.

" Neither Jack nor Jim lives in New York.

Ex2: Jane sings very beautifully. She also plays the guitar well.

" Jane not only sings very beautifully but also plays the guitar well.

UNIT 15: SPACE CONQUEST

PRONUCIATION:

/nt/: went, rent, tenant, didn’t

/nd/: end, remind, warned, friend

/nz/: phones, learns, Barnes, tonnes

GRAMMAR:

A. Could/ couldn’t; was/were (not) able to.

1. Caû hai ñöôïc duøng ñeå noùi leân ngöôøi naøo ñoù coù theå laøm ñöôïc gì trong quaù khöù

Ex: My granmother loved music. She was able to/could play the piano very well.

2. Duøng was/were able to, khoâng duøng could, noùi leân ngöôøi ta laøm ñöôc vieäc gì vaøo moät dòp naøo ñoù trong quaù khö.

Ex: Sue wasn’t at home when I phoned but I was able to contact her at her office.

B. Tag question (caâu hoûi ñuoâi)

1. Caâu khaúng ñònh + caâu hoûi ñuoâi phuû ñònh.

Ex: You will go with us, won’t you?

2. Caâu phuû ñònh + caâu hoûi ñuoâi phuû ñònh.

Ex: Mary isn’t a student, is she?

Chuù yù: Nhöõng traïng töø chæ söï phuû ñònh

Ex: Bill never smoke, doesn’t he?

3. Moät soá daïng ñaëc bieät:

a. caâu meänh leänh

Ex: Listen to this, will you?

b. Let’s work together, shall we?

c. I’m stupid, aren’t I or am I not?

d. noone, nobody, someone, somebody

Ex1: No one has arrived at the restaurant, have they?

Ex2: Somebody left the village early, didn’t they?

 

UNIT 16: THE WONDERS OF THE WORLD

 PRONUCIATION:

/ft/: gift, lift, soft

/vd/: arrived, loved, moved

/fs/: coughs, laughs, roofs

/vz/: behaves, loves, knives

GRAMMAR:

Special passive voice

S(1) + V(1) (say, think, find, believe, expect, …..) + that + S(2) + V(2) chuyeån thaønh hai daïng

1. It + is/was + V(1) ôû daïng quaù khöù phaân töø (V3/ed) + that + S(2) + V(2)

Ex: People say that he is rich.

" It is said that he is rich.

2. S(2) + be (is,am, are, was, were) + V(1) ôû daïng quaù khöù phaân töø + to V(2) ôû daïng nguyeân maãu khi ôû hieän taïi hoaëc + to V(2) ôû daïng Have + V3/ed khi ôû quaù khöù.

Ex1: People say that he is rich.

" He is said to be rich .

Ex2: They thought that the chairman left the meeting early.

" The chairman was thought to have left the meeting early.
