For seven years now we have been reaching out to 8-10 year old club members with our TRAIL program. TRAIL is an acronym for together raising awareness in Indian lives. With the high rates of diabetes in Native American children the TRAIL program has been incremental in Native country/ Boys and Girls Clubs in bringing awareness to kids.
We focus on four main topic areas that we teach with the medicine wheel model, teaching a balanced life spiritually, mentally, physically, and emotionally. It teaches us that the four elements, each so distinctive and powerful, are all part of the physical world. All aspects must be respected equally for their gift of a balanced life.
In TRAIL we also teach the youth once a week how to make healthy snacks that don’t require them to cook. We do community service projects so that the kids will be more aware of their community and have a greater sense of pride in taking care of it. There is a wonderful curriculum that has been developed by The National Congress of American Indians that assists us in helping the kids to make healthy choices for life. After a twelve week program the children are presented with a certificate of completion and a party with health as the theme.
