Welcome to TTSH Palliative Care Nursing Website

Palliative Care is a specialized care for people with terminal illnesses. It is focused on providing patients with relief from the symptoms, pain, and stress of a serious illness—whatever the diagnosis. The goal is to improve the quality of life for both the patient and their families. Palliative care is provided by a team of doctors, nurses, and other healthcare specialists who work together with a patient's other doctors to provide an extra layer of support. It is appropriate at any age and at any stage in a serious illness and can be provided along with curative treatment.

TTSH set up the first acute hospital-based palliative care service in Singapore in 2008.  Comprising a multi-disciplinary team of doctors, nurses, social workers and pharmacists, the team work together to improve the quality of life of patients diagnosed with life-limiting illnesses such as advanced cancers and organ failure.  Common issues pertaining to the physical, psychosocial and spiritual aspects affecting patients and their families are addressed holistically.

Besides looking after the patients admitted directly to the department, the Palliative Team also provide inpatient consultation services to the other disciplines. In addition, the team runs the Palliative Care Clinic (PCC) which operates daily from Monday to Friday. The clinic sees new patients referred by doctors both within and outside TTSH, as well as patients discharged from the hospital.

TTSH’s palliative care team work closely with the community hospice organizations, providing visiting consultancy service to both Assisi Hospice and Dover Park Hospice. Since April 2009, the department has been providing medical leadership and medical support to Dover Park Hospice. The team also engage actively in audit and research work and also participate in activities organised by the Singapore Hospice Council and Lien Centre for Palliative Care.

Besides clinical work, we are committed to the education and training of undergraduate and postgraduate nurses, allied health workers, medical students, advanced specialist trainees and doctors with a special interest in palliative care.
