La Pérouse's Last Letters
In 1788 two French ships, the Astrolabe and Boussole, led by Jean-François de Galaup de la Pérouse,
sailed into uncharted seas and vanished without a trace. The specimens and information collected were
lost with the ships, but the captain’s letters and journals were sent homeward aboard passing vessels
and survived. This installation uses fragments from the expedition’s only records, inscribed
in paper pulp on handmade sheets.
All that remains is paper.
