Textbook Free Mathematics Curriculum

During the summer of 2010, I lead the mathematics department at Byron High School in writing our own curriculum using no textbooks.  We had old books that were no longer meeting our needs, not being read by students, and only being used for homework problems.

In addition, we had no money and had a desire to have our state test scores increase.  We were confident that we could write our own quizzes/tests and write our own notes.  We were concerned about writing all our own homework problems until we came across Kuta Software
http://kutasoftware.com/

The Kuta software program is inexpensive, easy to use, and powerful worksheet generator for Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and Calculus.  It did not match our state standards perfectly, but it made our task of creating customized homework, quizzes, and tests a lot easier.

Since we did not have textbooks, we knew our students and parents would need some extra resources.  As a result, we developed a Moodle site for each course that contains the essential learner outcomes, our own teacher-created videos, notes from the SMART Board, homework, homework solutions, and links to extra material to help our students visualize the mathematical concepts.

We created a textbook free curriculum for Algebra 1, Geometry, and Statistics.  We still officially have a book for our Algebra 2 course, but our students choose not to use the book since all material is available online.  Eventually, our Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus and Calculus curriculum will be developed into textbook free curriculums.  The Pre-Calculus and Calculus courses are taught for college credit, so we will not develop a textbook free curriculum in those courses until the college gives us the go ahead.

What do our Moodle sites look like?
