2014 Backpacking Trip

Troop 61 has a tradition of doing a 15+ mile backpacking trip in the month of January and 2014 will not be an exception.  The 2014 trip will be over the MLK weekend.  The location will be Section 7 of the Pinhoti Trail.  See the flyer on the Resource Center page.
The most important thing about a backpacking trip is being prepared and our scouts are good at being prepared.  Backpacking in the winter has its challenges, the least of which is keeping warm with light weight gear.  On previous trips we have seen temperatures as low as 13 degrees and we have seen light snow.  However most January hikes are in beautiful weather with lows in the high 20's or 30's and highs in the 50's or 60's.
Some of the required gear is provided by Troop 61.  This includes tents and cooking gear. The most important and expensive piece of gear every participant needs is a quality sleeping bag.  Good hiking clothing and good boots are also required.  Gear advice can be found on the Backpacking Gear Advice document located on the Resource Center page of this website.  Read this document carefully and if you have any questions please speak with one of the Troop 61 scoutmasters.
