January Event Announcements!

Two new January event announcements!

Junior Leader Training!

All our scouts were invited to attend junior leader training on 1-11-15 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm with Troop 40 in West Windsor, NJ. We would be leaving the YMCA at 12:00 pm.

This 4 hour course instructs the boys in how a Boy Scout Troop is organized, core leadership skills, and teamwork.

IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THE BOYS ATTEND THIS FREE COURSE IF AT ALL POSSIBLE.

They will need a notebook, pens, and their Scout Handbook.

We will be leaving and returning to the YMCA on that day. While the permission slip is due 1-9-15, please let one of the scoutmasters know if you will be attending as soon as possible.

Winter Overnight Camping Trip!

Troop 431 was also invited to attend Troop 40's annual winter overnight camping trip at Ockanickon Scout Reservation. This trip is designed to give the boys a taste of winter camping in a safe environment. While the boys will be camping in tents, there will be an indoors, heated backup location should the scouts need it.

Please note, that due to the possible wet, cold and/or snowy weather conditions in January, no scout will be allowed to attend without proper footwear (waterproof boots, snow boots preferred), sleeping bag (a 0 degree bag is recommended, but two lesser degree bags are acceptable), sleeping pad (foam or thin air), and jacket (hoodies are not acceptable substitutes for an outdoor cold weather jacket). Because of these requirements, there will be two shake down meetings. The above 4 items should be brought to the first on 1-16-15. Everything else should be brought to the second on 1-23-15. The shake downs will occur during our regularly scheduled weekly meeting.

The details are still being worked out at this time, so the departing and returning times will be announced once they are finalized.

5-9-14 Announcements

posted May 9, 2014, 11:08 AM by Robert Ruszczyk   [ updated May 9, 2014, 11:50 AM ]

  • Membership is important! Troop 431 can’t grow without new members and ideas. Tell your friends about the things we’re doing and will be doing in Scouting and invite them to a meeting. Boys who bring a friend who stays for at least 6 months earn their “Recruiter” strip and other benefits, like pocket knives, mess kits, and other items. If you would like fliers or applications, please see Scoutmaster Robert.
  • We will meet next Friday, May 16th at the YMCA no later than 6:00pm to leave for the camping trip to Voorhees State Park. If you are not there on time, you cannot go. Please make sure you arrive by 6 and are ready to leave.
  • There will be a “Shakedown” Meeting on Tuesday, May 13, 2014 from 6:00pm to 6:30pm in preparation for our camping trip that weekend. You must be completely packed and have your bag with you at that meeting. At the meeting, you will be required to show what you are bringing to the trip to ensure that you are properly prepared. The pack/bags will then be left with Scoutmaster Robert until the trip. On Friday, May 16, you may bring one backpack with everything that was forgotten. You will take your equipment home with you on Sunday. As this will only take 10 minutes or less per scout, parents are encouraged to stay.
  • Please see the basic packing list distributed last meeting. If you have lost your copy, it is available on our website. This is a general list and should be tailored to the individual camp outs.
  • Be ready for your Scoutmaster’s conference on the camping trip. You should have received the “Scout” rank guide. Boards of Reviews will be held the week after the camping trip.
  • If there are questions about sleeping bags and other equipment, bring the items to the shakedown meeting so we can talk about the choices. All the leaders are there to help you, so don’t be afraid to ask questions.
  • Please remember money will be needed for Friday night dinner on the trip.
  • There are some restrictions on what can be brought with you on this trip. This will be repeated every week. Please do not bring any of the following:
    • Gameboys/PSPs – No video games are allowed on any trips.
    • Personal Food – We are a troop and will eat as a troop. Personal snacks are not allowed, as they also attract wildlife. No food will be kept in any tents. If you bring food, make sure there is enough for everyone.
    • Non-Scout approved knives. Blades over 3 inches, switch blades, butterfly knives, and fixed blades are not allowed on scouting trips. Folding pocket knives fewer than 3 inches are allowed, but must be turned into the Scoutmaster at the beginning of the trip. They will be returned when you earn your Totin’ Chip or the end of the trip, whichever is first.

  • We will begin discussions about what we will be doing in the next year, with a planning meeting being held during Summer Camp. Begin thinking about what YOU would like to do in scouting. Think about what kinds of activities, trips, and projects you would like to do as a troop and bring those ideas to the meeting. You scouts are responsible for setting the program.
