posted Jan 30, 2014, 9:59 PM by Troop 236 BSA

    Hello everyone,

The troop meeting planer for February 2014 is attached. The information has been added to the calendar and is summarized at the end of this email.

There are a number of events coming up soon.
2/17 will be a Court of Honor. We would like to have a Cookies and Cracker Barrel for the snacks after the CofH. There will be a Friends of Scouting presentation during the Court of Honor. In addition, some Webelos express interest in attending one of our CofH and may attend.

2/22 is the Klondike Olympics (Derby). This is a day event based on the Olympics. More information will be coming or see below.

3/2 is the Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser. It is only about a month away. We are expecting to have the same menu as last year; Sausage, Pancakes, French Toast, Juice, Milk and Syrup/butter. We plan on having a camping/tent display like last year and would like some sort of interactive craft in that area. If anyone has any scout pictures or video they would like displayed, please contact Mr Czech. We are planning on a silent auction. I believe we are planning on a Movie/Family Fun night, Fishing/Outdoor, Gardening, Soap and Greeting Card baskets. We will need donations for the first three baskets. We are fielding ideas to improve the auction. Some suggestions are having a starting bid and having a "Buy It Now" price for the early service attendees. Any thoughts on how to advertise the breakfast and ourselves at the breakfast?

I have attached the initial 2014 year plans developed by the scouts at the long term planning meeting. This is the framework upon which we will build the upcoming year. Items will be added and items will be dropped, but we will try to be close to the plan.

    Agenda Items

    ·         Statement Regarding Political Speech

o   Need a complete review and update of the parent handbook – volunteers are needed to get this done.

§  John to revise and send to Cyndi to review and then present to the parent committee.

    ·         Troop Ribbons – Keli

o   We do need new cording for a lot of the ribbons.  Dawn George volunteered to go to JoAnn Fabric and pick up new cording.

o   A new Troop flag has arrived and looks great, thank you John for taking care of this.

    ·         Recruitment Committee – Rocky Levercom, Cyndi Eckart and John Czech

    o   Upcoming opportunities

§  Nothing upcoming that we know about however we did miss an opportunity to recruit at a Northern Star Council event.  Need to work on getting better information ahead of time and planning for next year.

o   Halloween party; pass out the flyers and business cards next year.

o   The Pancake breakfast will be a great opportunity to put some information on the tables

    ·         Next year’s High Adventure

    ·         The Scouts have not yet chosen a place or time.

    o   Come up with a 2014 and 2015

§  Cost cap for 2014, should be small due to short term fundraising opportunities

o   One with a short term plan and one for a long term plan

o   It was decided that we would give them options i.e. hiking biking canoeing climbing and then research options from there

    ·         Per John’s suggestion the parents will be creating the voting ballot for the November TLC meeting.

o   It was decided to first determine what they want to do on the high adventure for 2014 and the ballot will consist of 4 options:

    §  Hiking

    §  Biking

    §  Canoeing

    §  Climbing

o   Once they vote on the area they want to focus on we the parents will do the research and determine options available and then let the boys vote on that.  Once all of the voting is complete a plan will be set in motion to get the boys ready for high adventure.

    ·         Need a shed cleanup

    ·         This needs to happen before next spring.

o   Gary could build a slot for the tables, the tables belong to the church that need to stay in there since the church lends us the shed space

o   Bring hooks, shelving etc, we will use whatever we have available.

    Fundraising and Finance

    ·         Herberger’s – Julie Martin

    o   Feedback

§  Saturday all day, Friday night or Wednesday into the evening will be our desired spots to fill for next time as they are the most lucrative for the boys

§  Need to sell 75 books in order to get the kick back from the event we did not quite make that goal we will get the profit from the books but not the kick back during the sale.

§  No Sunday nights, no more than three boys and must have two adults for each shift.  It does not pay to have more than three boys at each door for each shift

§  Did much better at Rosedale than Northtown

    o   Any upcoming dates

§  Will sign up again in Spring

    ·         Wreath Sales

o   Wreaths have been ordered and are set to be delivered to Jackie’s on the 14th for sorting on the 16th.

    o   11/16 is sorting at Jackie’s at 11 AM

o   Bring something to share.  Jackie is requesting something small as there will be lots of food to share nothing big is needed.

    o   Similar to last year.

§  After reviewing the orders and the quantities, we need to fill Moffat’s order first due to volume, we can avoid open cases by doing this.  Jackie will do this when the wreaths arrive as Bruce will be picking them up early.

§  In order of form.  Parents you MUST accompany your son if they sold wreaths, it will be your responsibility to ensure you and your son receive the wreaths that were ordered.

§  We will have checkpoint to ensure the order are correct but instead of partnering the boys with each other we found it works better if they are paired with their parent for this process.

    o   Rewards

§  Need to decide on a reward, some ideas thrown out were the raptor center, ice climbing, base camp.

    ·         We will take this up during the next parent meeting as we were running short on time this was tabled for the next meeting

    2013 03 March Newsletter

posted Mar 25, 2013, 8:13 PM by Troop 236 BSA

    Hello everyone.

Many things will be happening over the next few months. Tuesday, March 26th, the troop will attend the Centennial pool open swim to test for rank requirements and for summer camp.

Yes, it is time to start thinking about Many Point Summer Camp. We need to know who plans on attending Many Point this year. Any scouts who plans on attending needs to pay a $50 deposit April 1st. The deposit can be paid from a scout's troop account. I will have account information at the next weekly scout meeting. Scouts 14 and older can sign up for the Water Sports Outpost or the Amazing Pace (these cost an extra $40 and the deposit increases to $75). The Press Corps is also an option. Take a look at the Many Point website or the leader guide for more Many Point information.
    http://www.manypoint.org/
    http://www.manypoint.org/sites/default/files/2013%20Leaders%20Guide.pdf

Another big upcoming event is the Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser on April 14th (Pancakes, sausage, butter, syrup, milk, juice and coffee and half and half). Scouts should plan on being at St. Joe's from 7:30 AM to 2 PM. Breakfast will be served from 8 AM to 12:45 PM. We are setting up Silent Auction Basket sale. We still need items for some of the baskets. I will be sending out more information about the Breakfast and other fund raiser details.
1 - Grilling basket is almost complete

Unfortunately, that is the same weekend of the National Weather Service Scout Day. It is a half day event at the National Weather Service in Chanhassen MN. There the scout can fulfill all except one of the requirements for the Weather Merit Badge. The last requirement is a presentation to the troop. Once that is done, any Weather Merit Badge councilor (such as the ones up at Many Point) can sign off on the card. This is an individual activity, but a group of scouts could plan to go together.

    2012 09 September Newsletter

    posted Sep 6, 2012, 8:15 PM by Troop 236 BSA   [ updated Sep 6, 2012, 8:16 PM ]

    Hello everyone,
Sorry it took so long to get this out. This is a busy time of year.
We have three scouts working toward an Eagle this year. Be aware that they may need some help.
There will be a Star Wars themed camporee this month. Please make sure your scout knows if they will be attending. We will be trying to find out who will be going at Monday weekly meeting. Please read the notes and maybe go to the website: http://threerivers.nsbsa.org/FallCamporee.aspx
The scout theme of the camporee is Wilderness survival (MB) and the Star Wars scenario is an infiltration. Please pack light. The scouts can make shelters and sleep in them (Wilderness Survival MB requirement).
    Parking
You will only be allowed to park in designated areas and units will NOT be able to have car or troop trailer in their campsite. All equipment will need to be brought into the campsite by rickshaws available at camp. Only staff, troop trailers and their associated vehicle will be allowed to park in the main upper level parking lot.
    Shooting Sports Permission Forms
Range shooting is tentatively being planned for Fall Camporee. In order to participate, all youth must be accompanied by a completed Shooting Sports Permission Form, which is included in this packet. Please include these in a separate section of your Medical Form Binder.
The badge for this Fall Camporee, the Klondike Derby AND the Spring camporee go together to make one larger badge. Please plan on attending all three events.
