November 2018 Newsletter

posted Nov 1, 2018, 3:22 PM by Terry Dutton

November 1, 2018

Dear Scouting Family:

We trust that November is a time of thankfulness for all of you.  We are thankful for having a great troop of Scouts to work with. We are also thankful for all the adult help and support given throughout the year.

Wreath Business

From our wreath sales committee:  HELP NEEDED!  22 scouts have not turned in any wreath sales numbers!  If you haven’t reported any wreath sales yet, please reply to this email with your sales numbers. All scouts should keep selling wreaths!  Please remember that our goal is 30 wreaths sold by each scout.  Money collected can be turned in at troop meetings or dropped off at Mr Tresselt’s house (333 N. Harvey).

Patrol Wreath Sales Competition: Currently The Pink Panther Patrol is leading with an average of 25 items, followed by The Flaming Potatoes (19 items) and The Chipmunks (19 items).

Since we order more than are currently sold, boys should continue to sell.  Anyone selling a 72” or 84” wreath needs to call Mr. Tresselt (708-848-5040) to confirm availability.

Wreath Unloading – ALL SCOUTS: Saturday, Nov. 17 at 8:30 AM

Wreath Pick-up Times: Saturday, Nov. 18 after wreath unloading or throughout the following week

Location: Biek’s home, 440 N. Linden (Linden and Chicago Ave.), Thank you, John and Tina!

Please continue to encourage your scout to sell wreaths until they’re all gone!

November Campout

Note that signup is tomorrow, Friday, November 2, for our trip to BSA Canyon Camp, Stockton, IL November 9-11. If your scout won't be at Friday's troop meeting, but still plans to go on the trip, he must contact his patrol leader to inform him (before Friday).  Late sign-ups will NOT be accepted.  We are also in need of drivers, so please let your scout know if you can help.

2019 Registration

It’s time for re-registration!  Each calendar year, the troop must register with the national and local Boy Scout council.  Registration is $50 ($62 with Boys’ Life magazine). Please pay your dues promptly. Order of the Arrow members should also pay the OA dues of $15.  You were sent a registration email last week. A re-registration form is attached to this email. Registration payment must be received no later than November 16.

Summer Camp 2019 – Believe it or not, we’re already thinking summer camp at Camp Makajawan!  Save the dates for camp: July 7-20, 2019. Scouts can attend for one week or both weeks. Wreath sales can dramatically reduce the cost of summer camp for your scout!

Assistance for scouts

Troop 16’s adult committee believes that no scout should opt out of troop activities or events due to a financial hardship.  Through our fundraising and donations, funds are available to assist in paying fees for troop activities and events.  If your scout is in need of this type of support, contact Jim Bicak to confidentially discuss ways in which the troop can help assist in supporting your son's involvement in scouting.

Troop Committee

Our Troop Committee meeting this month will be held on Tuesday, November 6, at First United Church from 7:30 to 9:00 PM.  We encourage and welcome all parents to attend.

February Newsletter

posted Feb 9, 2018, 6:28 PM by Troop 16

Dear Scouting Family:
Our second semester always seems a bit busier than the first one (if that’s possible), so please save this letter and note the calendar at the end. Please share this newsletter with your scout.

Troop Ski Trip Saturday
We’re headed to Cascade Mountain on Saturday, February 10. We have some space available, so get your
sign-ups turned in ASAP. Please drop off forms at Mr. Bicak’s house or at Friday’s troop
meeting. Family and friends are welcome on this trip, as well. FIRST COME-FIRST SERVED. The bus will LEAVE at 7AM. If you’re late, we’ll already have left.

Important Election Nights Coming Up
The scouts have two important election nights coming up: February 2 and March 2. On February 2, scouts will be electing their Senior Patrol Leader and their patrol leaders for the second half of the school year. It is important that all scouts participate in this process. This is also an opportunity for a scout to join a different patrol, if they choose to.

Also, on Feb. 2 and March 2, we are holding Order of the Arrow elections. The Order of the Arrow is an honor society in scouting to recognize scouts who are leaders and demonstrate best the Oath and Law. The scouts of our troop elect their peers to this honor society. There are two rounds of Order of the Arrow elections – a preliminary election on Feb. 2 and a final election on March 2. Scouts will need a certain number of votes in the preliminary election in order to be on the final ballot.

February Campout
The signup deadline for the February 23-25 Warren Dunes, Michigan, campout is February 16 at the troop
meeting. If you have not yet volunteered to drive on a campout, this one is close enough to do a drop-off or a pick-up.

Annual Troop Dinner – March 3
Save the date! Our 102nd annual troop dinner will be held on Saturday, March 3 at 6:30 PM at St. Giles Parish in McDonough Hall, 1103 N. Columbian. RSVPs must be received by February 23. Walk-ins are welcome to stand along the wall and not eat due to planning needs for food service and table space.

Summer Camp
Yes, we’re already thinking summer camp! Our summer camp dates are set for July 8-21 at Camp Makajawan. Scouts can attend for one week or both. It is strongly encouraged that scouts attend summer camp for at least a week. This is the best opportunity for merit badge and rank advancement requirement work.

Included with this newsletter is a flyer for summer camp deposits. Deposits are due at the troop dinner
(March 3) in order to get the lowest camper fee. Rebates are given based on your scout’s wreath sales.

New Scout Joining Night
We need your help! Word of mouth from our current scout families is our only recruitment tool. If you know or have any fifth graders interested in scouting, please be sure they know about our Joining Night on March 9 at 7:30. This is an informational meeting for prospective New Scouts and their parents. Boys do NOT have to be a Cub Scout to join Boy Scouts. Even if Webelos have not yet "crossed-over," we'd like them to come to this meeting on March 9. Attached is a joining night flyer to forward or print and give to families of prospective scouts, or direct them to our website.

Merit Badge Opportunity
Merit Badge Academy has been a popular event for our scouts in past years. Please note, this is not troop
events, nor is the troop organizing a group to attend. These are for individual scouts. Scouts should wear full uniform if they attend. Any scout attending a merit badge needs to secure a “Blue Card” from Mr. Gill or Mr. Dutton before the event.

Merit Badge Academy: March 17 at Elmwood Park High School. A variety of merit badges are offered.
Registration information will be posted here: https://scoutingevent.com/456-17945
Please note that Troop 16 has counselors for all Eagle-required merit badges, so scouts are encouraged to
select optional merit badges if they attend Merit Badge Academy. Eagle-required badges can be earned
throughout the year working with one of our troop’s counselors.

January Campout
Our first January campout at Camp Lowden was a big success. Scouts spent the day keeping warm and
active, then were able to enjoy pizza and bowling in the evening to celebrate their wreath sales!

Sincerely,
Terry Dutton, Scoutmaster
Jim Bicak, Committee Chair

Please note: if you still have money and/or a sales list to turn in, please do so by Friday,
January 12. On the included sales list if you see an amount listed in the ‘Owed’ column or if the ‘List’ column is blank, it means we are not ready to pay that scout’s rebate. If you have any questions about what may be due from your scout, please call Mr. Tresselt right away. Scouts will only receive their cash rebates when money and sales lists are turned in. Cash rebates will be paid at upcoming troop meetings to all scouts who have monies and sales lists in.

We were fortunate to have the assistance of numerous parent volunteers on the wreath committee this
year, as well. Thanks to all for assisting.

January Campout

Troop Website
Our calendar, newsletters, and other useful information are always posted on our website. Visit

Scout Active Participation
Boy Scouts, like any other activity boys are a part of, is an active commitment. While we understand
that there are times of year when boys have other commitments, it is expected that scouts participate when they are able. For the past several years our troop has determined certain minimum participation requirements to remain a member of the troop. For the Fall (Sept.-Dec.): attend 40% of the meetings, attend 1 of the 3 campouts, and sell wreaths; for the Spring (Jan.-Jun.): attend 40% of the meetings and attend 2 of the 5 campouts; and over the course of the year: participate in at least 1 troop service project.

A scout who does not
meet the requirements for two consecutive semesters is considered inactive.

Sincerely,
Terry Dutton, Scoutmaster
Jim Bicak, Committee Chair

Dear Scouting Family:

We trust that November is a time of thankfulness for all of you. We are thankful for having a great troop of
Scouts to work with. We are also thankful for all the adult help and support given throughout the year.

Since we order more than are currently sold, boys should continue to sell. Anyone selling a 72” or 84” wreath needs to call Mr. Tresselt to confirm availability.

Registration payment must be received no later than November 17.

Service Opportunity - Sarah’s Inn Ribbon Removal - November 4
October was Domestic Abuse Awareness Month, and Sarah’s Inn has had ribbons around downtown Oak Park for this event. We have been asked to help by removing all the ribbons on Saturday, November 4. Volunteers should meet in front of Community Bank of Oak Park (Forest and Lake St) at 10am on Saturday, November 4. Please bring a pair of scissors to cut the ribbons.

October Campout
Our campout to the Kurtenbach’s Family Farm could not have been better! Scouts spent the day hiking and
exploring the farm and ended the day with a LARGE campfire. Our adults spent the morning providing some service to the Kurtenbachs, painting a building, and working on some plumbing projects. A group of older scouts helped to build a bridge on an ATV trail. Thanks to our drivers for making the trip to and/or from the farm.

October Newsletter

posted Nov 11, 2017, 8:31 AM by Troop 16   [ updated Nov 11, 2017, 8:45 AM ]

Dear Scouting Family:

We’re off to a busy start. You should have received the full troop calendar with last month’s
newsletter. But always check the abbreviated calendar printed with each monthly newsletter as changes do occur. You can also find a current calendar on our website (www.troop16oakpark.com). Please share this information with your scout.

Wreath Sales Information
Our wreath sale is underway! We need the help of all families to make this a successful fundraiser. It
is expected that all scouts and families participate, and incentives are in place to encourage participation!
If your scout didn’t receive his wreath sales binder, please contact us ASAP.

Friday, October 27 – Initial Sales Orders Due. Scouts should continue selling since we order lots of
extras for sales after this date. Scouts should keep selling until the wreaths are gone.

Saturday, November 18 – Wreath unloading and pickup, 440 N. Linden (Linden and Chicago) 8:30
A.M. Scouts can pick up their wreath orders after the delivery and unloading are complete (until 3:30
PM).

October Campout
Our next campout is coming up, October 20-22, to the Kurtenbach Family Farm, near Chatsworth, IL.
Sign-up for this campout will be at our troop meeting Friday, October 13; be certain your scout brings
his $15 cash for his patrol leader for food and knows if a parent is able to drive. LATE SIGNUPS ARE NOT
ACCEPTED.

Service Projects Coming Up – Help Needed!

Saturday, Oct. 28 – Oak Park Art League Fall Clean-up
Oak Park Art League (720 Chicago Ave) has asked for our help raking leaves and cleaning up the grounds.
Please meet at the Art League at 9am. Bring a rake and work gloves. We’ll be working for a few hours, so
scouts who need to arrive late or leave early can do so. Donuts and juice will be provided!

Saturday, Nov. 4 – Sarah’s Inn Ribbon Clean-up
Sarah’s Inn has asked for help taking down ribbons displayed in Downtown Oak Park during Domestic
Abuse Awareness Month (Oct). More details on this service project will follow.

Committee Meeting
Our monthly troop committee meeting occurs the first Tuesday of each month. This month we meet
tomorrow, Tuesday, October 3, 7:30 PM, at First United Church. We encourage any interested parents to
attend – hope to see some of you there to learn what your son’s troop is doing and get involved with our
troop’s operations. Our main areas of interest at this time of the year are our annual budget and our wreath sale.

Popcorn sales
While our troop is not selling popcorn as an official troop fundraiser, we do want to let you know that
your scout can sell or place an order for popcorn if you are interested. An information and order
sheet was distributed to all scouts with their wreath sales binder. Checks should be payable to Troop 16.
Order deadline is October 21st and payment deadline is December 15. Pickup can be made in time for
Thanksgiving delivery. This is a way to get some good popcorn and also support the scouts. Our Council
provides sales prizes for the boys and the troop will provide the same rebates as we do for wreath
sales.

Merit Badge Opportunities
Throughout the year there are various opportunities for scouts to earn merit badges. These activities
are not Troop 16 organized events, but scouts are welcome to sign up individually to participate. Scouts
need a “blue card” for any merit badge they take, so please see or contact Mr. Gill for blue
cards. Here are some upcoming opportunities:

October 14 - Fall Merit Badge Clinic in Barrington (over 50 merit badges offered)
November 4 – Shotgun and Archery Merit Badge Completion at Adventure Camp in Rochelle, for scouts
with “partial” merit badges

September Campout
Our first campout of the year was a great success. 59 scouts and 12 adults enjoyed a weekend of
hiking and exploring at White Pine State Park, near Oregon, IL. Thank you to our volunteer drivers. If you
weren’t able to volunteer to drive for September, we hope you find another campout where you’re able to
help.

September Newsletter

posted Sep 22, 2017, 9:57 PM by Troop 16

Dear Scouting Family:
If you are a new family to the Troop, welcome! If you’ve been with us before, welcome back. This letter
contains important information about our fall activities, and our full year calendar also is attached. Please share all of this information with your scout, and save it for future reference. Newsletters will be published on a monthly basis.
Be sure to check the calendar at the end of each newsletter, since there may be changes from the full-year
one included with this newsletter. A full troop roster will be sent out shortly.
Parent support is crucial in a troop our size. We have over 115 scouts registered at this time. Please find a
way that you can contribute to the troop.
One method of supporting the troop is reading this newsletter and other messages we send to families.

Troop Parent Committee – Next week on Tuesday!
Our Troop Committee meets on the first Tuesday of each month. Our first meeting will be Tuesday,
September 5, at First United, from 7:30 to 9:00 PM. We welcome all parents at our monthly committee meetings, which are designed to support the troop’s logistics, programs, and finances.

First Troop Meeting
Our first troop meeting of the year will be on Friday, September 8. At this meeting, the scouts will form their patrols for the year. It is very important that scouts attend the first two meeting to be a part of the patrol formation and election process. Remember, meetings always start at 7:30 P.M. and end at 9:00 P.M. Scouts must wear their uniforms. Parents are always welcome to attend, but are especially encouraged to come in for the last 15 minutes of the meeting to hear all of our announcements.

General Campout Information
The Patrol Leaders Council (PLC) chose locations for the campouts. The year’s calendar is attached. Be
sure to check the "Current Calendar" printed at the end of each monthly newsletter.
Scouts must sign up for camping trips one week in advance. Normally the cost of a campout is handled on a patrol basis; it is $15 per scout for each campout. Cooking is done separately by each patrol with equipment provided by the troop.
At each campout scouts must have a proper scout uniform and appropriate gear for the season.

First Campout
We’ll be going to White Pine Forest State Park, near Oregon, IL, September 22-24. Of course we will need
several drivers and adults willing to stay. For this campout the deadline for signing up is Sept. 15. The fee due to the patrol leader is $15. Scouts need to bring the exact amount of cash to give to the patrol leader. Please let your boy know whether you are able to drive to the campout.

Troop Participation Requirements
All scouts in the troop are expected to meet the minimum participation standard: (1) attend 40% of the
meetings; (2) attend one campout in the fall and two in the spring; (3) participate in one service project; (4) participate in wreath sales.

Den Chief Trainings-September 30, October 7
Scouts interest in being a Den Chief for a local Cub Scout den should strongly consider attending Den Chief
training. The troop will pay for and register scouts for this training. If your scout is interested in being a den chief, contact Mr. Dutton. Transportation will be coordinated once we know who is attending.

Merit Badges and Partials
At the troop picnic, scouts received the merit badges they earned at summer camp. If your scout has any
questions about his merit badges or requirements needed to complete his partials, please have him discuss this with Mr. Gill at an upcoming troop meeting. Mr. Gill also can provide blue cards needed
when a scout is interested in completing a merit badge.

Frequently there are merit badges offered around Chicagoland by local organizations. These are not Troop
16-organized events. Here are some upcoming events opportunities:
DuPage Forest Preserve (variety of badges, dates, and locations)
Shooting Sports-September 16

Other Information
Our Senior Patrol Leader is Hugh. If your scout has a question that cannot be answered by his patrol
leader, Hugh would be the next person for him to talk to.

Our website has lots of information, including a calendar of events: www.troop16oakpark.com
We have a troop text message system, where you can receive reminder texts from the troop.

Sincerely,
Terry Dutton, Scoutmaster

May Newsletter

posted May 13, 2017, 2:47 PM by Troop 16

Dear Scouting Family,

Troop 16 welcomes the families of our 22 new scouts who have recently registered with the troop. We hope that your son’s time with Troop 16 is enjoyable and productive. A reminder especially for our new families: Since emails can get lost or deleted, it might be best to print the newsletter and save it for reference. You can always check our website for a current calendar and other information: www.troop16oakpark.com.

Family Campout – June 9-11
Register now for our Family Campout to Pokagon State Park in Indiana June 9-11! Attached to this email is the flyer for summer camping fun with your family. We’ll cook all meals as a group and the troop will facilitate many fun activities, including boating, hiking, swimming, fishing and more! Please RSVP by May 12.

May Campout
Our May campout is to Rock Cut State Park near Rockford, IL, May 19-21. Signup for the campout is Friday, May 12. We need several drivers and adults to camp for the weekend, as this is one of our highest attended weekend campouts of the year. Scouts who are attending must bring $15 cash to the May 12 meeting and know if a parent is driving/attending. Late signups will not be accepted.

Final Troop Meeting
Friday, June 2 is our year-end meeting and Court of Honor. Boys will be electing next year’s Senior Patrol Leader (SPL) at that meeting. Any scout interested in serving as SPL needs to speak with Mr. Dutton by our May campout weekend. The regular troop meeting begins at 7:30, and the Court of Honor in the church sanctuary begins at 8:00. All parents are invited to join us for this ceremony recognizing all scouts who have advanced a rank since December. All New Scouts will be recognized, as well. Refreshments will be served afterwards. This will be a nice way to wrap up our year and we hope to see you there.

Summer Camp
If you are already signed up for summer camp, look for a letter in the US Mail arriving today or tomorrow! Please read that letter carefully. It will contain information about camp medical forms, fees due, merit badge schedule, and confirmation of week(s) your scout is attending. Our deadline for collecting all fees due is our pre-camp meeting on Thursday, June 15 at 7:30 PM. This meeting is required for all first year campers and their parents. This meeting is optional for returning campers. We will be collecting all fees and paperwork from 6:30-7:30 PM, prior to the start of the meeting.

Scouts must have a couple pairs of Boy Scout (or similar-looking) pants or shorts for summer camp. Boy Scout socks are a good idea, too. They are synthetic and great for camping. You can purchase these items at the Scout Store in LaGrange or downtown Chicago (or online at www.scoutstuff.com). If you are still thinking about attending camp, we need you to sign up ASAP. Please call Terry Dutton if you have any questions about the summer camp program.

Forest Preserve Clean-up Service Project
Our annual Thatcher Woods cleanup will take place Saturday, May 6. We will meet at the Thatcher Woods parking lot on Chicago Avenue (behind Trailside Museum) at 9:00 AM and finish by 11:00 AM. Juice, donuts and coffee will be provided. Participants should bring work gloves. No RSVP is needed; scouts and parents can meet at the forest preserve to participate. This service project may be canceled if river flooding continues this week.

Eagle Court of Honor
Please join us on Saturday, May 13 at 4:00 PM in the main sanctuary for an Eagle Scout Court of Honor.

Other Service Project Opportunities
A few scouts are needed to help at First United’s Gospel Choir Concert on Saturday, May 6 in the early evening. Scouts will be handing out parking information flyers to guest arriving at the parking lot entrance and directing them to parking areas. More information and times will be announced at Friday’s troop meeting.

The Food Pantry at First United Church needs our help! On Saturday, May 13, the US Postal Service has their annual food drive, so our help is needed unloading, sorting, and shelving all of the donations. More information and times will be announced at upcoming troop meetings.

Parents-Join The Troop Committee!
Our final Troop Committee meeting of the year will be tomorrow, Tuesday, May 2, at First United Church, from 7:30 to 9:00 P.M. We welcome all parents.

Sincerely, Terry Dutton, Scoutmaster
