Dear Scouting Family:

We hope you’re having a restful summer. It’s been a busy summer for Troop 16! This is an abbreviated
newsletter to get you some early information on the busy 102nd year of scouting for Troop 16, which is about to kick off! To see all of the amazing pictures from summer camp, visit our troop website (www.troop16oakpark.com) or our facebook page (Troop 16 Oak Park).

Troop Annual Awards Picnic
Our annual summer awards picnic will be on Friday, August 25 at Taylor Park’s picnic area at 6:00 PM.
Families bring their own meals...we’ll have the charcoal grills hot for grilling. Uniforms are not required. All summer awards will be presented at the picnic. We hope your family can join us – even if your scout wasn’t at summer camp. This is a great way to reconnect and start the scouting year!

First Troop Meeting
Our first troop meeting of the school year will be Friday, September 8. At this meeting, scouts will select their
patrol leader for the first half of the school year. It is very important that scouts attend the first meeting to be a part of the patrol formation and election processes. Remember, meetings always start at 7:30 P.M. and end at 9:00 P.M. Scouts must wear their uniforms. Parents are always welcome to attend, but are especially encouraged to come in for the last 15 minutes of the meeting to hear all of our announcements.

May Newsletter

posted May 13, 2017, 2:47 PM by Troop 16

Dear Scouting Family,

Troop 16 welcomes the families of our 22 new scouts who have recently registered with the troop. We hope that your son’s time with Troop 16 is enjoyable and productive. A reminder especially for our new families: Since emails can get lost or deleted, it might be best to print the newsletter and save it for reference. You can always check our website for a current calendar and other information: www.troop16oakpark.com.

Family Campout – June 9-11
Register now for our Family Campout to Pokagon State Park in Indiana June 9-11! Attached to this email is the flyer for summer camping fun with your family. We’ll cook all meals as a group and the troop will facilitate many fun activities, including boating, hiking, swimming, fishing and more! Please RSVP by May 12.

May Campout
Our May campout is to Rock Cut State Park near Rockford, IL, May 19-21. Signup for the campout is Friday, May 12. We need several drivers and adults to camp for the weekend, as this is one of our highest attended weekend campouts of the year. Scouts who are attending must bring $15 cash to the May 12 meeting and know if a parent is driving/attending. Late signups will not be accepted.

Final Troop Meeting
Friday, June 2 is our year-end meeting and Court of Honor. Boys will be electing next year’s Senior Patrol Leader (SPL) at that meeting. Any scout interested in serving as SPL needs to speak with Mr. Dutton by our May campout weekend. The regular troop meeting begins at 7:30, and the Court of Honor in the church sanctuary begins at 8:00. All parents are invited to join us for this ceremony recognizing all scouts who have advanced a rank since December. All New Scouts will be recognized, as well. Refreshments will be served afterwards. This will be a nice way to wrap up our year and we hope to see you there.

Summer Camp
If you are already signed up for summer camp, look for a letter in the US Mail arriving today or tomorrow! Please read that letter carefully. It will contain information about camp medical forms, fees due, merit badge schedule, and confirmation of week(s) your scout is attending. Our deadline for collecting all fees due is our pre-camp meeting on Thursday, June 15 at 7:30 PM. This meeting is required for all first year campers and their parents. This meeting is optional for returning campers. We will be collecting all fees and paperwork from 6:30-7:30 PM, prior to the start of the meeting.

Scouts must have a couple pairs of Boy Scout (or similar-looking) pants or shorts for summer camp. Boy Scout socks are a good idea, too. They are synthetic and great for camping. You can purchase these items at the Scout Store in LaGrange or downtown Chicago (or online at www.scoutstuff.com). If you are still thinking about attending camp, we need you to sign up ASAP. Please call Terry Dutton if you have any questions about the summer camp program.

Forest Preserve Clean-up Service Project
Our annual Thatcher Woods cleanup will take place Saturday, May 6. We will meet at the Thatcher Woods parking lot on Chicago Avenue (behind Trailside Museum) at 9:00 AM and finish by 11:00 AM. Juice, donuts and coffee will be provided. Participants should bring work gloves. No RSVP is needed; scouts and parents can meet at the forest preserve to participate. This service project may be canceled if river flooding continues this week.

Eagle Court of Honor
Please join us on Saturday, May 13 at 4:00 PM in the main sanctuary for an Eagle Scout Court of Honor.

Other Service Project Opportunities
A few scouts are needed to help at First United’s Gospel Choir Concert on Saturday, May 6 in the early evening. Scouts will be handing out parking information flyers to guest arriving at the parking lot entrance and directing them to parking areas. More information and times will be announced at Friday’s troop meeting.

The Food Pantry at First United Church needs our help! On Saturday, May 13, the US Postal Service has their annual food drive, so our help is needed unloading, sorting, and shelving all of the donations. More information and times will be announced at upcoming troop meetings.

April Newsletter

posted Apr 8, 2017, 9:16 AM by Troop 16

Boy Scout Troop 16 Oak Park, Illinois
April 2, 2017

Dear Scouting Family: Please be sure to share this newsletter with your scout and post it in a convenient place. Our annual dinner was a great success, highlighted by our patrols’ creative skits. We hope you enjoyed it!

Eagle Court of Honor – Join us on Sunday, April 9 at 4:00PM in the main sanctuary for an Eagle Scout Court of Honor.

April Campout - Note that Friday, April 21, is signup for our great Wisconsin backpacking campout April 28-30. This is a very unique campout – we’ll be backpacking in Kettle Moraine Forest near Kewaskum, Wisconsin. The troop has backpacks for any scout who doesn’t own his own. Backpacks can be picked up at the troop meeting. Please be certain your boy looks over the gear list to be handed out at the meeting. If your scout won't be at the April 21 troop meeting, but still plans to go on the backpacking trip, he must call his patrol leader to inform him (before the meeting). We are in need of at least several adults to backpack with us on the patrol overnights – the trips are of varying length. Note: New Scouts will not participate in this outing.

New Scout Campout – April 22-23: Our newly joined scouts will have their very first camping trip with the troop on a special New Scout Campout on Saturday to Sunday, April 22-23. We’ll be camping at Blackwell Forest Preserve in Winfield. New Scouts will spend the day working together as a patrol, working with our troop equipment to camp and cook together and having fun! Troop guides and some troop adults will also participate. More information will be sent to parents of new scouts.

Service Project - Our annual Thatcher Woods cleanup will take place Saturday, May 6.

Family Campout – June 9-11: Save the date for our Family Campout to Pokagon State Park in Indiana June 9-11! More information will be available at the Troop 16 dinner, but save this June 9-11 date now for summer camping fun with your family. We’ll cook all meals as a group and the troop will facilitate many fun activities, including boating, hiking, swimming, fishing and more!

Summer Camp Uniforms and Medical Forms - We’ll be at Camp Makajawan July 9-22 this year. If you haven’t yet signed up for camp, please do so ASAP. Camp fees vary based on a scout’s wreath sales. Also, please note all scouts must have an annual physical exam completed within the 12 months prior to summer camp (July 22, 2016 or newer). The BSA’s medical form must be used. Click this link for the BSA’s medical form: BSA MEDICAL FORM 2017.

AYSO VIP Soccer Buddy Program - Would your teenage scout like to volunteer some time on Saturdays this spring? OPAYSO is looking for buddies for soccer players with special needs. Buddies assist players in various ways, both on the field and off, and they are crucial to the success of the league. AYSO provides buddy training, so volunteers do not need to know a lot about soccer, and they do not need to have prior experience working with kids with special needs. Being a buddy is a great way to gain that experience and to do some good in the community. The time commitment is just 2 hours a week, on Saturday afternoons from April 8-May 27, at Ridgeland Commons. The exact time has not been confirmed yet.

New Buddy Training will be held in the evening on Wed April 5, and an All-Buddy Meeting (including returning buddies) will also be held on Wed April 5. If you want to sign up or have questions about what being a buddy entails, feel free to email us at adaptivesoccer@zoho.com.

Parents - Join the Troop Committee! - Our Troop Committee meeting is on Tuesday, April 4, First United Church, from 7:30 to 8:30 PM. This is a great way to get involved with the troop at an administrative level.

Sincerely,
Terry Dutton, Scoutmaster and Jim Bicak, Committee Chair

March Newsletter

Dear Scouting Family:
Our annual dinner is coming up this weekend: Saturday, March 4, 6:30 PM at St. Giles Parish.

Please bring your checkbook to the dinner to pay deposits for summer camp and other activities.

New Scout Joining Night – Spread the Word!

We need your help! Word of mouth from our current scout families is our only recruitment tool. If you know or have any fifth graders interested in scouting, please be sure they know about our Joining Night on March 10 at 7:30 pm. This is an informational meeting for prospective New Scouts and their parents. Boys do NOT have to be a Cub Scout to join Boy Scouts. Even if Webelos have not yet "crossed-over," we'd like them to come to this meeting on March 10.

March Campout

The troop will be camping March 17-19 at White Pines State Park in Oregon, IL. Signup is at the troop meeting on March 10. Scouts need to know if a parent can drive and bring $15 in cash for the patrol leader.

Family Campout – June 9-11

Save the date for our Family Campout to Pokagon State Park in Indiana June 9-11! More information will be available at the Troop 16 dinner, but save this June 9-11 date now for summer camping fun with your family. We’ll cook all meals as a group and the troop will facilitate many fun activities, including boating, hiking, swimming, fishing and more!

Summer Camp

Our summer camp dates are set for July 9-22 at Camp Makajawan. Scouts can attend for oneweek or both. It is strongly encouraged that scouts attend summer camp for at least a week. This is the best opportunity for merit badge and rank advancement requirement work. Deposits are due at the troop dinner (March 4) in order to get the lowest camper fee. Attached with this newsletter is a listing of wreath rebates for summer camp. Congratulations to our biggest wreath sellers, who will receive over $300 per week in summer camp rebates!

February Campout

Our trip to Warren Dunes State Park last weekend was very successful. The ‘mild’ temperature made the weekend very enjoyable. The scouts spent the day sledding and exploring the dunes. Thanks to our volunteers who drove and/or stayed the weekend with us.

Summer High Adventure

Scouts Star Rank and above may be eligible for a summer high adventure canoe trip to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area of Northern Minnesota. Information is available at troop meetings from Terry Dutton or Jim Bicak. A $100 deposit is due at the troop dinner for this trip.

Other News

Our Troop Committee meeting this month will be Tuesday, March 8, at First United Church, from 7:30 to 9:00 PM. We welcome all parents. This is a great way to get involved with the operations of the troop, so we hope to see you there.

Announcing February Newsletter

posted Feb 10, 2017, 6:36 PM by Troop 16

Troop Ski Trip Saturday
We’re headed to Cascade Mountain on Saturday, February 11. The bus will LEAVE at 7AM. If you’re late, we’ll already have left.

February Campout
The signup deadline for the February 24-26 Warren Dunes, Michigan, campout is February 17 at the troop meeting. If you have not yet volunteered to drive on a campout, this one is close enough to do a drop-off or a pick-up.

Annual Troop Dinner on March 4
Save the date! Our 101st annual troop dinner will be held on Saturday, March 4 at 6:30 PM at St. Giles Parish in McDonough Hall, 1103 N. Columbian. Please note the change in location. A signup flyer is attached with this newsletter. RSVPs must be received by February 24. Walk-ins are welcome to stand along the wall and not eat due to planning needs for food service and table space.

Summer Camp
Yes, we’re already thinking summer camp! Our summer camp dates are set for July 9-22 at Camp Makajawan. Scouts can attend for one week or both. It is strongly encouraged that scouts attend summer camp for at least a week. This is the best opportunity for merit badge and rank advancement requirement work. Deposits are due at the troop dinner (March 4) in order to get the lowest camper fee. Rebates are given based on your scout’s wreath sales.

Merit Badge Opportunities
There are a couple upcoming merit badge opportunities happening around our area. Please note, these are not troop events, nor is the troop organizing a group to attend. These are for individual scouts. Scouts should wear full uniform if they attend. Any scout attending a merit badge needs to secure a “Blue Card” from Mr. Gill or Mr. Dutton before the event.

Chess Merit Badge
February 20 (Presidents Day) in Downers Grove
https://scoutingevent.com/456-11333

Merit Badge Academy

Calendar further down the page.

January Campout
Our first January campout at The Ranch in Rochelle was a big success. Scouts spent the day keeping warm and active, then were able to enjoy pizza and bowling in the evening.

Wreath Wrap-Up
Please note: if you still have money and/or a sales list to turn in, please do so by Friday, January 13. On the included sales list if you see an amount listed in the ‘Owed’ column or if the ‘List’ column is blank, it means we are not ready to pay that scout’s rebate. If you have any questions about what may be due from your scout, please call Dick Tresselt right away. Scouts will only receive their cash rebates when money and sales lists are turned in. Cash rebates will be paid at upcoming troop meetings to all scouts who have monies and sales lists in.

We were fortunate to have the assistance of numerous parent volunteers on the wreath committee this
year, as well. Thanks to all for assisting.

January Campout
Our January 27-29 winter campout will be at BSA Adventure Camp (aka The Ranch aka Rochelle Scout Camp). This is a special winter campout where, in addition to enjoying the winter activities, the troop will
head into town Saturday night for pizza and bowling to celebrate our great wreath sales! As with all weekend
campouts, the sign-up is at the meeting prior to the campout on January 20. Late sign-ups are not accepted.
To be eligible to attend this campout, your scout must have sold at least 15 items in our wreath sale.

Troop Ski Trip
Our annual ski trip to Cascade Mountain in Portage, Wisconsin is coming up soon! We’re headed to Cascade on Saturday, February 11. Family members and friends are welcome to attend this event, too! This is a very popular day trip, so sign up soon! Space is limited and we do fill up. Registrations due to the troop by Feb. 3!

Important Election Nights Coming Up
The scouts have two important election nights coming up: February 3 and March 3. On February 3, scouts will be electing their patrol leaders for the second half of the school year. It is important that all scouts participate in this process. This is also an opportunity for a scout to join a different patrol, if they choose to.

Also, on Feb. 3 and March 3, we are holding Order of the Arrow elections. The Order of the Arrow is an
honor society in scouting to recognize scouts who are leaders and demonstrate best the Oath and Law. The
scouts of our troop elect their peers to this honor society. There are two rounds of Order of the Arrow elections – a preliminary election on Feb. 3 and a final election on March 3. Scouts will need a certain number of votes in the preliminary election in order to be on the final ballot.

Committee Meeting
Our Troop Committee meeting this month is next week, Tuesday, January 10, at First United Church
from 7:30 to 9:00 PM. Parents are encouraged to attend – this is a great way to get involved with the troop!

Troop Website
Our calendar, newsletters, and other useful information are always posted on our website. Visit
www.troop16oakpark.com and add it as a bookmark in your web browser!

Scout Active Participation
Boy Scouts, like any other activity boys are a part of, is an active commitment. While we understand
that there are times of year when boys have other commitments, it is expected that scouts participate when
they are able. For the past several years our troop has determined certain minimum participation requirements to remain a member of the troop. For the Fall (Sept.-Dec.): attend 40% of the meetings, attend 1 of the 3 campouts, and sell wreaths; for the Spring (Jan.-Jun.): attend 40% of the meetings and attend 2 of the 5 campouts; and over the course of the year: participate in at least 1 troop service project. A scout who does not meet the requirements for two consecutive semesters is considered inactive.

Sincerely,
Terry Dutton, Scoutmaster
Jim Bicak, Committee Chair

Wreath Sales
Keep Selling! Scouts should bring all cash and checks collected to Friday's troop meeting. If your scout is finished selling, delivering, and collecting, he can turn in his wreath sales binder, too. Scouts will not receive any rebates until their sales monies, lists, and items signed out from the wreath yard are all verified and matched. Attached are current sales totals, followed by current payment summary. If you have questions about your scout's information, please contact Mr. Tresselt.

Keep selling until it's all gone! We currently have lots of wreaths still available for sale: Door Swags, 20”, 26”, 36”, 60” and garland all available.

Committee Meeting
Our Troop Committee meeting this month will be held on Tuesday, December 6, at First United Church from 7:30 to 9:00 PM. Parents are encouraged to attend – this is a great way to get involved with the troop!

Aidan’s Diaper Fund Service Project Troop 16
Scout Aidan B. is the founder of a charitable organization known as Aidan's Diaper Fund that raises money to purchase diapers for families in need. The charity has grown each year and last year Aidan was able to purchase and donate over 11,000 diapers! We would like to invite the scouts to come and help us unload the diapers at the Oak Park River Forest Food Pantry on Saturday December 17th at 2 p.m. If there are any Scout families that would like to make a tax deductible charitable donation, please visit the fund Link at the Oak Park River Forest Community Foundation at http://tinyurl.com/aidansdiaperfund.

January Campout
Our January 27-29 winter campout will be at BSA Adventure Camp (aka The Ranch aka Rochelle Scout Camp). This is a special winter campout where, in addition to enjoying the winter activities, the troop will head into town Saturday night for pizza and bowling to celebrate our great wreath sales! As with all weekend campouts, the sign-up is at the meeting prior to the campout on January 20. Late sign-ups are not accepted. To be eligible to attend this campout, your scout must have sold at least 15 items in our wreath sale.

Boy Scout Troop 16
Oak Park, Illinois
November 1, 2016

Dear Scouting Family:

We trust that November is a time of thankfulness for all of you. We are thankful for having a great troop of
boys to work with. We are also thankful for all the adult help and support given throughout the year.

Wreath Business
From our wreath sales committee: HELP NEEDED! 31 scouts have not turned in any wreath sales numbers! If
you haven’t reported any wreath sales yet, please reply to this email with your sales numbers. All scouts should keep selling wreaths! Please remember that our goal is 30 wreaths sold by each scout. Money collected can be turned in at troop meetings or dropped off at Mr Tresselt’s house.

Patrol Wreath Sales Competition: Currently The Bucks Patrol is leading with an average of 19.9 items, followed by The Raccoons (16.9 items) and The Honey Badgers (15.8 items).

Since we order more than are currently sold, boys should continue to sell. Anyone selling a 72” or 84” wreath
needs to call Mr. Tresselt to confirm availability.

Wreath Unloading – ALL SCOUTS: Saturday, Nov. 19 at 8:30 AM
Wreath Pick-up Times: Saturday, Nov. 19 after wreath unloading or throughout the following week
Storage Location: 440 N. Linden (Linden and Chicago Ave.)
Please continue to encourage your scout to sell wreaths until they’re all gone!

November Campout
Note that signup is this Friday, November 4, for our trip to Mississippi Palisades in Savanna, IL, November 11-13. If your scout won't be at Friday's troop meeting, but still plans to go on the trip, he must contact his patrol leader to inform him (before Friday). Late signups will NOT be accepted. We are also in need of drivers to stay the weekend with us – due to the distance, driving one way is not the best option.

Registration
It’s time for re-registration! Each calendar year, the troop must register with the national and local Boy Scout
council. Registration is $35 ($47 with Boys’ Life magazine). Please pay your dues promptly. Order of the Arrow members should also pay the OA dues of $15. Registration payment must be received no later than November 18.

BSA Youth Protection for Scouts – November 18 – Parents Invited
Every two years our troop presents the BSA’s Youth Protection Training program for our Scouts, which focuses on youth protecting themselves from abuse through the “Three Rs: Recognize, Resist, Report”. This is a BSA-produced video with discussion throughout. Parents are invited to join us at our November 18th Troop meeting for this presentation, which will begin at 8pm.

October Campout
Our campout to the Kurtenbach’s Family Farm could not have been better! Friday night set-up went very well, with all scouts pitching in to complete the work. Scouts spent the day hiking and exploring the farm and ended the day with a LARGE campfire. Our adults spent the morning providing some service to the Kurtenbachs, painting a building, hanging a new door, and repairing the toilet! Thanks to our drivers for making the trip to and/or from the farm.

Other Information
Summer Camp 2017 – Believe it or not, we’re already thinking summer camp at Camp Makajawan! Save the
dates for camp: July 9-22, 2017. Scouts can attend for one week or both weeks. Wreath sales can dramatically reduce the cost of summer camp for your scout!

Assistance for scouts
Troop 16’s adult committee believes that no scout should opt out of troop activities or events due to a financial hardship. Through our fundraising and donations, funds are available to assist in paying fees for troop activities and events. If your scout is in need of this type of support, contact Jim Bicak to confidentially discuss ways in which the troop can help assist in supporting your son's involvement in scouting.

Troop Committee
Our Troop Committee meeting this month will be postponed due to the Cubs game! We’ll meeting Monday
night, November 7, at First United Church from 7:30 to 9:00 PM. We encourage and welcome all parents to attend.

Please note that committee meetings are usually the first Tuesday of each month.

October 2016 Newsletter

Boy Scout Troop 16
Oak Park Illinois
October 2, 2016

Dear Scouting Family
We’re off to a busy start. You should have received the full troop calendar with last month’s newsletter. But always check the abbreviated calendar printed with each monthly newsletter as changes do occur. You can also find a current calendar on our website (www.troop16oakpark.com). Please share this information with your scout.

Wreath Sales Information
Our wreath sale is underway! We need the help of all families to make this a successful fundraiser. Each scout was given his sales binder at the Sept. 30 meeting. It is expected that all scouts and families participate, and incentives are in place to encourage participation! If your scout wasn’t at Friday’s meeting, his wreath binder was dropped at your home on Saturday or Sunday. If you didn’t receive it, please contact us ASAP.

Friday, October 28 – Initial Sales Orders Due. Scouts should continue selling since we order lots of extras for sales after this date. Scouts should keep selling until the wreaths are gone.

Saturday, November 19 – Wreath unloading and pickup, 440 N. Linden (Linden and Chicago) 8:30 A.M. Scouts can pick up their wreath orders after the delivery and unloading are complete (until 3:30 PM).

October Campout
On Friday, October 21, we will depart promptly at 7:00 PM for the family farm of a former Troop 16 scout near Chatsworth, IL. Sign-up for this campout will be at our troop meeting Friday, October 14; be certain your boy brings his $15 cash for his patrol leader for food and knows if a parent is able to drive. Please be certain that your boy is properly dressed for the weather (and wearing his uniform) and has packed rain gear. LATE SIGNUPS ARE NOT ACCEPTED.

Food Pantry Service Project
First United’s Food Pantry needs our help unloading and sorting donations from the Girl Scout Food Drive on Saturday, Oct. 22. Scouts and parents are needed in two shifts: from 2pm-4pm and 4pm-6pm. The work includes unloading a delivery truck, sorting and organizing donations, and shelving or boxing the food. This is a great opportunity for service hours, which scouts need for rank advancement. We hope you can join us for any or all of the time. Late arrivals are welcome. This is a campout weekend for the troop, so we’re hoping those scouts who aren’t camping can step up to help out with this important project. No RSVP needed.

Committee Meeting
Our monthly troop committee meeting occurs the first Tuesday of each month. This month we meet on Tuesday, October 4, 7:30 PM, at First United Church. We encourage any interested parents to attend – hope to see some of you there to learn what your son’s troop is doing and get involved with our troop’s operations. Our main areas of interest at this time of the year are our annual budget and our wreath sale.

Popcorn sales
While our troop is not selling popcorn as an official troop fundraiser, we do want to let you know that your scout can sell or place an order for popcorn if you are interested. All you need to do is contact Dick Tresselt or Neal Heriaud. An information and order sheet was distributed to all scouts at the September 30th troop meeting. Checks should be payable to Troop 16. Order deadline is October 21st and payment deadline is December 2nd. Pickup can be made in time for Thanksgiving delivery. This is a way to get some good popcorn and also support the scouts. Our Council provides sales prizes for the boys and the troop will provide same rebates as we do for wreath sales.

Merit Badge Opportunities
Throughout the year there are various opportunities for scouts to earn merit badges. These activities are not Troop 16 organized events, but scouts are welcome to sign up individually to participate. Scouts need a “blue card” for any merit badge they take, so please see or contact Mr. Jenks for blue cards. Here are some upcoming opportunities:

Microsoft Merit Badge Courses Photography – Oct. 8 https://scoutingevent.com/456-8984 Programming – Oct. 9 https://scoutingevent.com/456-8988

September Campout
Our first campout of the year was a great success. 47 scouts and 12 adults enjoyed a weekend of hiking and exploring at Rainbow Scout Reservation, near Morris, IL. Thank you to our volunteer drivers. If you weren’t able to volunteer to drive for September, we hope you find another campout where you’re able to help.

Troop T Shirts For Sale
Our 100th anniversary t-shirts are still for sale. All scouts attending summer camp received a t-shirt. Shirts were also available for sale at our June 100th Anniversary event. If you’re interested in purchasing a troop t-shirt, contact Mr. Tresselt.
