Music Theory is a year long course and is for the advanced students in band or choir (upperclassmen only). This class will start at the basic level of note placement and will advance all the way to part writing for up to 4 voices.
Key signatures, major and all minor scales, instrument transpositions, as well as basic part writing techniques will be the main focus of the class.
Students will also learn "aural skills" to help build their understanding of music reading. Every other day will be devoted to the students learning how to sing music on sight, and will be apart of some of their exam grades.
Students are encouraged to take this class if they plan on taking music theory in college or if they plan on doing composing on some level in their future.
At the end of the academic year, students will submit a basic 4-part composition to be performed by members of the PCHS Symphonic Band at the end of the year concert for the public.
