Benefits to Afternoon Preschool

Afternoon preschool classes are more difficult to fill, but there are some real advantages to choosing an afternoon class.  One of the advantages is a calmer, more focused learning classroom.  Reasons why this might be the case:

Children have not been rushed out the door to get to school.
Children have had a full nights sleep.
Children have had a full and healthy breakfast and lunch.
Children have had a chance to run and play.
Quieter environment- less students in the afternoon

Here are some things to consider if you are debating on morning vs. afternoon classes:

What times work best for your work schedule and daycare?

If you answer yes to one of these questions, your child is a good candidate for afternoon preschool.
Does your child like to sleep until 8am or later?
Does your child take time to warm up in the mornings or do they seem to enjoy hanging out in their jammies for a bit?
Do you have a baby at home that makes it more difficult to get out the door quickly in the mornings?
Do you enjoy doing other preschool age community activities that are usually held in the mornings during the week?Playgroups, story time at library, music class, gymnastics, toddler time at AirFX, Art or movement classes thru CR Recreation, etc.
Does your child have sensory issues?
Does your child have difficulty warming up to new situations or other children?
Is your child no longer napping or taking naps less than 7 days a week?
Do you have some concerns about developmental delays?  Our afternoon class will most likely have less students which means more one on one time with staff to give your child extra support.
Is your child advanced?  Our afternoon class will most likely have less students which means more one on one time with staff to create challenges for your child.

My child still naps:
If your child is still napping daily, an afternoon class may not be best.  But consider how many months away Sept. 2018 is.  If it's several months away your child's napping could change a lot between now and next fall.  If your child is only napping a few times a week, they may be weaning out of naps and attending school in the afternoon could keep them stimulated enough to skip an afternoon nap and transition into an earlier bedtime instead.  This transition will eventually need to happen with all families by kindergarten because schools in the Cedar Rapids area provide kindergarten as a full day program, Monday-Friday.

If you'd like to get a feel for afternoon preschool visit any time between 12:40-3:30 Monday-Friday.  Afternoon preschool is available for the 2018-19 school year for 3 and 4 year olds.
