For Freshman Class:

Holly Erner

Forensic Science and Chemistry

A.      Why are you interested in running for Student Government?

I love being involved in decisions that will affect a group of people in a positive way and being able to have a voice in what goes on around campus, as well as what to fix and improve. I want to be able to represent a body of students in a positive manner. I believe I can make a major influence on my class and represent them the way they think a person of their status should.

 B.    What are you involved in at Trine University?

I am on the Women’s Lacrosse Team. I play the clarinet in the Sound of Thunder marching band. I am also the Team Director on the Relay For Life committee.

 C.   What are three goals you have for this position? How will you accomplish these goals?

My three goals are very simple. 1) To make sure that each student has a chance to state their opinion on what they believe should happen here on campus, as well as being able to state their concerns about activities, new policies and groups on campus by being an active listener and making myself available for students and friends to talk to me. 2) To make the communication skills here on campus easier and more reliable to those who need assistance or have questions, mainly for R.A’s and activity and group leaders. 3) To get more activities planned on campus throughout the week and weekends for those who stay on campus and make their experience here at Trine more fun and enjoyable by promoting more school spirit and enthusiasm.

 D.  What are your ideas for campus improvement?

I believe there should be more activities on the weekends when students do not have the chance to go home. There have also been many complaints about communication problems from both the R.A.’s and different organization groups. I would like to find a way to fix this and help students adjust better to campus life and activities. I also think that, by promoting more school spirit, I can get students to get more involved on campus, to join and participate in more activities and to inspire them to take a chance and have fun. College is about exploring the many opportunities you have! To do so, involvement and encouragement are successful ways to make sure that each and every student has the best time they can here at Trine University.

 E.    What skills and qualities will you bring to this position and how will they help you?

I am very social and am friends with a variety of students here on campus. This will help me connect with my freshman class and communicate their concerns, problems and suggestions. I also love to help people as much as I can and try to find a solution to any problem that comes my way.

 F.     What do you think makes a successful leader?

I believe that a successful leader must gain trust from those he/she is representing. A leader must have good communication skills and must be able to clearly state what is on his/her mind. A successful leader must be committed and devoted to solving the issues at hand. A leader must be creative and open-minded, enabling them to develop new ideas and consider the ones that are suggested by others. No matter the situation, a leader must be inspirational and able to keep the group together when things get rough. These characteristics are what make a leader successful and able to represent a body of people.

A.      Why are you interested in running for Student Government?

I am interested in running for student Government because I want to make a difference here at Trine University.

 B.     What are you involved in at Trine University?

I am involved with the football team here at Trine University

 C.   What are three goals you have for this position? How will you accomplish these goals?

The three goals that I have for the position of Freshman Senator are the following. First goal is to represent the Freshman class. Second goal is to make improvements that the Freshman class wants to be done. The third goal that I have is to get my peers and classmates here at Trine to know of what Student Government does to improve Trine University. I will meet these goals by getting elected, listening to what my class mates think that need to be done. For my final goal I believe that as a group we could make filers to let our peers know what the Student Government is doing and getting others involved.

  D.  What are your ideas for campus improvement?

Fix the wifi, making Trine a MacBook friendly place, and finally free laundry.

 E.     What skills and qualities will you bring to this position and how will they help you?

The skills that I have are leadership experience from being in my high school student government as Sophomore Class President, and Treasurer my Junior and Senior year. I have also served in an organization called KEYS(Kosciusko Endowment Youth Service). In KEYS I was Grant Chair for two years and Treasurer for one year. Another skill that I have is that I am a good listener.

 F.      What do you think makes a successful leader?

I believe to be a successful leader a leader needs to listen to what everyone is saying and make a decision after listening. A successful leader also is someone who will do what he or she thinks is right even if that decision is not a popular decision that is what makes a successful leader.

A.      Why are you interested in running for Student Government?

I am interested in running because I am very interested in helping make Trine the best it can be. I want to be able to give the students the best college experience possible. I want to listen to students concerns and help them anyway I can.

 B.    What are you involved in at Trine University?

I am currently a full time student. I am not involved in any groups or sports at this time. Despite me not being involved in these groups; I talk to people all over campus and they are concerned on many issues. I want to help my fellow students on these issues.

C.   What are three goals you have for this position? How will you accomplish these goals?

1.       Listen to the students and fix what they think needs fixed

I will listen to the students and try my best to make them happy.

2.       Improve Trine to make it the best college in Indiana.

I will try to improve the University to give the students the best education and experience possible

3.       Make Trine University students the closest bunch of students in Indiana.

I will try and help make interesting activities that everyone will want to get involved in

 D.  What are your ideas for campus improvement?

I want to improve the workout equipment in the workout rooms.

I want to fix the keyboards in the link

I also want to upgrade the desks in classrooms

I want to make the library accessible 24/7 so students can get work done whenever they need to

 E.    What skills and qualities will you bring to this position and how will they help you?

I have learned great skills at my summer job at Symmetry Medical. While working here I have learned great leadership and listening skills. Leadership and listening will help me because I will be able to represent the student body sufficiently and listen to their problems.

I am a very honest person and will always represent the student body with integrity. This will help me because the student body will be able to trust me.

I am also a very driven person. The student body will always be able to count on me working hard.

 F.     What do you think makes a successful leader?

I think integrity, courage, honesty, and perseverance. These traits are so important to becoming a successful leader because the student body will be voting for me to represent them. This is not a light matter, the students will put their trust in me and I need to give it my 100%

For Sophomore Class:

Ryan Goodhew

Criminal Justice

A.      Why are you interested in running for Student Government?

I believe that the school has been heading in the right direction for the past few years, but there is still much room for improvement. I believe that I have the skills, both leadership wise and socially, to connect with both the student body and the faculty administrators.

 B.    What are you involved in at Trine University?

Men’s Varsity Soccer Team, Kappa Sigma Fraternity (Public Relations Chair), IFC, ASCJA

 C.    What are three goals you have for this position? How will you accomplish these goals?

1.)    As Trine University is very sensitive to student needs, I believe that the student body needs to use Student Government as a primary resource to raise concerns and make the campus a better place for all.

2.)    I think that the younger students, such as sophomores and freshmen, need to get involved with more activities and be more involved throughout their whole experience as a college student.

3.)    I would like the push for campus wide growth. I believe that Trine University has the potential to grow exponentially with certain pushes in the right direction.

 D.   What are your ideas for campus improvement?

I would push to see the parking arrangements at Trine University be addressed sooner rather than later. I believe that if we have another big freshman class as we had this year, there will not be enough parking spots to adequately suit all the student body’s parking needs. I would also like to see better meal options for those working students who are at their jobs past 10:00pm and cannot make it to the café or even The Depot on nights that they work. This is an issue that I’ve talked over with many students, and have even had to deal with it myself at times. Also, I believe there needs to be a large overhaul of Hersey Hall. As I’ve visited other universities in our conference, I have noticed that our sports facilities, specifically our free weights room and the East/West basketball courts, are not up to par with the standard of modern exercise.

 E.    What skills and qualities will you bring to this position and how will they help you?

I sacrificed this past summer of my life to attend officer training for the United States Marine Corps. I completed training for the summer and entered back into the civilian world with many leadership skills that many young adults my age have not yet acquired. We had drilled into us qualities such as time management, unselfishness, bearing, and tact. I believe that these qualities and the experience I have gained will make me a perfect candidate for the position.

 F.    What do you think makes a successful leader?

A successful leader is a person who puts his people before himself. I am a strong proponent in the idea of servant leadership. I’ve learned that in order for somebody to lead, they must first learn how to follow when appropriate.

For Junior Class:

Paxton Fleming

 Major: Forensic Science/Chemistry

Why are you interested in running for Student Government?

                                                              i.      I am interested in running for student government because I like to interrelate with just about anyone and everyone. Every day I try to smile and talk with everyone, attempting to meet someone new everyday. I feel like being approachable and knowing a lot of people then I could represent the junior class very well. In high school, I was the class president every year as well as the student body president my senior year. I understand what it takes to lead a student body and represent them to my fullest.

b.      What are you involved in at Trine University?

                                                              i.      I am involved in: Kappa Sigma Alpha as Secretary, RUSH Chair, and Activities Chair; Residence Life Staff; Circle K Member; Order of Omega Member; National Society of Leadership and Success Member, SPC Treasurer, Thunder Nation Secretary, and a Student Ambassador.

c.       What are three goals you have for this position? How will you accomplish these goals?

                                                              i.      I hope to be a voice for the Junior class and bringing everyone together as a whole and I plan to accomplish this through talking with everyone and knowing their opinions. I would like to do that by listening to them and possibly sending out surveys. If the surveys do not bring a great turnout I would individually talk with students from different “groups” and get their overall opinion.

ii.      Listen to the class as a whole. There is a difference in asking for an opinion and listening. I want to listen to their opinion and ideas and let them see that their voice matters and makes a difference.

iii.      I hope to keep the government structure and set the rules and accomplish the goals we set as an organization. My past experiences as president of my class throughout high school will help me achieve these goals in helping everyone stay on track.

d.      What are your ideas for campus improvement?

                                                              i.      I would like to see the campus become more interactive with each other. For example I know the sororities and fraternities try to all work together as one but it would be nice if more organizations could as well.

ii.      Also, there are a lot of groups trying to accomplish a lot of the same goals and if we could all come together through this government as the voice maybe there could be more “man power” put into on future goals.

e.       What skills and qualities will you bring to this position and how will they help you?

                                                              i.      The skills I believe I have acquired over the years would be approachable, a listener, responsible, interactive and organized. I like to believe that anyone can approach me and I would love to approach him or her and strike any conversation up about any topic. Also, I listen to others whether it is about the Yankees or the weather I will listen to their opinion or ideas. To be responsible is a commitment I make in spreading my time between all of my other activities. I must prioritize and stay organized to stay responsible for each group. I must be able to interact with anyone and everyone to be the voice of such a great group of students and people to lead.

f.       What do you think makes a successful leader?

                                                              i.      A leader is someone who set an example for his or her peers but is willing to listen to them in all aspects. Also, a leader must understand they are not greater than their peers but everyone is on the same level and we all have a voice, the same voice with different opinions and the leader is here to bring them all together. A leader is someone who wants to find the good in everything and everyone and bring out the best in them to provide a better University for the students. By applying all of these characteristics I believe a successful leader will emerge.
