Trilobyte Games Announces The 7th Guest: Infection

Medford, OR

Trilobyte Games, LLC announced completion of The 7th Guest: Infection, an entirely new puzzle game developed from the ground-up for the iPad.  The game will be released on the App Store in less than two weeks.

Priced at $2.99 for  iPad, the engaging game with decidedly original graphics and score is a newly created reincarnation of the infamous and maddening Microscope puzzle that confounded users of the original 7thGuest.  Using a custom built AI engine, the game features a microscopic environment full of virulent, colorful pathogens that are struggling to overtake competitive bugs and break-out to epidemic status.

“I’m excited to bring this new iteration of a familiar puzzle to a handheld mobile platform and a new generation of gamers,” said Rob Landeros, co-founder of Trilobyte and Trilobyte Games, LLC; CEO and Art Director/Designer on all projects. “This puzzle did not make the port from original source to the iOS version of The 7th Guest. Fans quickly told us how important this puzzle was to gamers. So our team spent a lot of time with game design and adding an insanely brilliant AI engine to bring depth and richness to the re-created puzzle.”

Product Description

This is the infamous strategy game that wouldn't die. It's virulent. It's infectious. It's to die for...

Old man Stauf built a house and filled it with his toys. Or so the legend goes. It is said that one of these games could be found by entering the madman's laboratory and peering into his microscope. The germs and microbes there seemed to be imbued with his spirit and intelligence. It is also said that perfectly sane people who attempted to beat him at his own game went completely, absolutely, stark raving mad. Trilobyte has brought the microscope to you, giving you the opportunity to take up the challenge.  But you play at your own risk. You have been warned.

Trilobyte Games has re-built the wickedly maddening “microscope puzzle” from The 7th Guest. Re-imagined expressly for the iPad, The 7th Guest: Infection is a strategy game for two players or for single play against the mad genius, Henry Stauf.

Easy to play, but ever-challenging and difficult to master, this new version of the classic game takes advantage of Apple’s Game Center, enabling you to match your play against friends and other players worldwide.

Infection is a strategy board game designed to be played by the user against the AI engine; or, by two players. The 7x7 square grid, featuring layers of animated microbial action, is divided into 7 columns and 7 rows of consecutive cells. The object of the game is to make your microbes a majority on the board at the end of the game, by infecting and converting as many of your opponent's microbes as possible.

Each player begins with two microbes, blue or red. The game starts with the four microbes on the four corners of the board, with blue in the top left and bottom right and red on the other two. Red moves first.

During their turn, players move one of their microbes either one or two spaces in any direction.  Diagonal distances are equivalent to orthogonal distances, e.g. it is legal to move to a cell whose relative position is two squares away both vertically and horizontally. If the destination is adjacent to the source, a new microbe is created on the empty departure square. Otherwise the microbe on the source moves to the destination. After the move, all of the opponent player's microbes adjacent to the destination cell are converted to the color of the moving player. Players must move unless no legal move is possible, in which case they must pass.

The game ends when all cells have been filled or one of the players has no remaining microbes. The player with the most microbes wins.

  • Play against Stauf himself... if you can withstand his maddening taunts

November 17, 2010- Medford, Oregon

I'm pleased to announce the 7th Guest iPhone app is in Beta 4 phase, and in the hands of our testing crew. We’re closing in on the prize, on time and on budget.

Though true to the original in every way possible, I bare the news that we had to cut the Pentagon/Knives puzzle because it was just too small to be played well on the iPhone screen.   We’re testing a mod for the iPad.   We are also losing [drum roll please] the piano and microscope puzzles because both are buggy. None of these puzzles was essential to game play and they had no role in unlocking later puzzles in the game.  The original game had a total of 22 puzzles, the iPhone version will ship with 19.

In conjunction with this announcement, I am posting several iPhone 4 screen-shots provided by the development team.  I think you’ll like them.

Here is a quick side note about the building that was used to model Stauf's mansion in the original game.  For those of you who need an excuse to visit the building, (The Nunan Estate), it's a romantic bed and breakfast in the historic gold mining town of Jacksonville, Oregon. You can check it out here http://www.nunanestate.com.  Just to mention a few things in the immediate vicinity of Jacksonville: the world-renowned Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the Britt Festival, fine dining at the Jacksonville Inn, and the Applegate Valley Wine Trail.  There is no shortage of romantic bed and breakfast inns nor outdoor scenic beauty to help twist the arm of your non-gamer spouse.  If you plan heading out this way sometime, let us know and we'll offer more tips.

See you all on the interwebs.
