Claire Cloutier Try the Tri

Want to try a Triathlon?  Swim 1/4 mile, Bike 9.5 miles, Run 2 miles

Some thoughts about Try the Tri from a recent participant:

I have to say special thanks to the members of TriFury. I was able to join you for five races this season and I can honestly say each time was an awesome experience. I like so many fall into the category of a runner, turned cyclist, who wanted to experience triathlon but dreaded swimming. As much time as I had spent in a pool, my first open water swim was filled with panic and a list of techniques I needed to refine. Still, I was encouraged to return, matter of fact I can’t think of a single encounter with any member when I was either racing or volunteering that was not positive and full of encouragement.

Someone once asked why I would travel so far, there must be a similar group closer to home. Simply put, No there is not, what you have is unique. I hope you realize how empowering and special this weekly event and support group is to athletes’ out there. To work on putting the three disciplines together, experience what transition is like and to do it in a fun, competitive atmosphere is great. I was always amazed that every week when asked “who is here doing this for the first time” the number of hands that would go up, every week, without fail. For as much as TriFury is known for having members that are participating in events from sprints to Ironman, you are cultivating and inspiring people who watch and think “ I wonder if I could.”

When I run my first sprint this fall, I will have my TriFury transition mat with me, hoping there will be some good mojo for when I get in from the swim. I’ll be looking forward to when the 2017 season starts, until then I hope to see you out on the course.

What is it?
Claire Cloutier Try-the-Tri (CCTTT) is a once-a-week event geared towards an introduction to the sport of Triathlon.  It starts Wednesdays mid-June and lasts through the beginning of August, and is organized by Jay Powell ( with assistance provided by Laura Boerman (Registration Coordinator), James Hughson (Volunteer Coordinator), and Marc Shaponic (on-site mentor).  The race consists of a ~400 yard swim, 9.5 mile bike, and 2 mile run. Water stations are provided at T2, at the turn around for the run, and at the finish.  The course is marked with signage, volunteers and cones. Check out the video of the course.

Note:  the swim will have a beginners buoy, giving you a chance to shorten the swim.  There are life guards, kayaks, swim angels, and a safety boat for the swim as well.

We continue to support our beginners.  Those who are interested in “trying” a triathlon, this is what this race series is for.  Once you try it, you'll be hooked.  We will have dedicated bike racks for beginners, as well as an on-site mentor to answer questions and help beginner triathletes.

Who can participate and how much?
■ Trifury club members in good standing are eligible to race ($10 per race).
■ Tyngsborough residents are eligible to race ($20 per race, ID showing Tyngsborough address required).
■ Non-members who have never raced CCTTT in the past can try it out once ($20). Note that non-members and those outside Tyngsborough who have raced CCTTT in the past must become a member to participate again.

Membership signup or renewal should be done on-line, using the link from the TriFury membership page here.  TriFury membership dues must be paid before participating as a TriFury member.

Club members are highly encouraged to volunteer (if not participating).  This year we will again request that you volunteer once for every 4 races you compete in.  This means that you can race 8 times, and volunteer twice, giving you 2 TriFury Selected event points.  2 points!!
