The YMCA in Wilmington, along with Bill Nye, Joe Noto, and Ray Anderson hosted a great tournament this year with over 40 participants, ranging from age 14-77, and 350lbs. of shrimp. The Handball club at NC State brought 5 participants to the tournament; David Bednar, Justin Rinehart, Joey Tibbett, Fred Hain, and Vince Espinoza. For Justin and Joey this was their first tournament and they were scheduled in a bracket with Matthew Falcone, and (Mike's Son). With only four participants they were able to follow a round-robin style format where each player was guaranteed 3 games. . . . (more to come later)
Sam Marshall and David Bednar from the Handball club at NC State competed in their first tournament July 20th-22nd. The beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina were a cool respite from the heat of Raleigh. Friday Sam won his first match against Mike Brown (5, 6). David also won (1, 2) over Steve Light. David and Sam also won their doubles match (2, 3) that evening.
Saturday morning Sam lost to Jim Stokely (16, 19) in a close two matches. David beat Eli Hipps (4,8) in a youthful match of athleticism and blur of tattoos, putting David into the final against Jim Stokely. David and Sam won their second doubles match as well putting them into the final against tournament organizer Randy Lanier and newcomer Eli Hipps. David's singles match against Jim was a well fought victory (5, 5) and he earned the title of B-singles "Winner". Sam and David's doubles match earned a lot of spectator approval with a sense of camaraderie and sportsmanship that handball is known for, as well as some well placed jokes and shots. Sam and David emerged victorious as B-doubles "Winners".
Organizers of the tournament were gracious hosts allowing David and Sam to Camp along the beautiful Tuskasegee river. Saturday play was followed by a wonderful banquet of BBQ and beverages at JJ's. We had a great time and can't wait to do it again next year.
