Shopping In 1840

Exhibit at Lincoln Log Cabin State Historic Site of general store in 1840s.
From Dr. Rutherford, 1841:
 
"There are no stores in this place at present; lst summer there was two.  They united & took hogs & corn from many of their customers which pork they drove when fat to the Wasbash river and sold for cash.  They sold last year 15 thousand dollars worth of goods at pretty much cent per cent.  Having been in buissness here several years they conculded to remove 16 miles south to the county town...therre will not be more than one store for a country extending N & South 35 miles & six broad (averaging) extending along the Embarras River."
