Treena Sircar Basu
Associate Professor of Mathematics
Occidental College, Los Angeles, CA
In the fall of 2014, I joined the Department of Mathematics at Occidental College as an Assistant Professor. I received tenure in 2020 and am currently serving as an Associate Professor of Mathematics. Before arriving at Occidental, I served as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Ithaca College in Upstate New York. Adjusting to Ithaca’s climate proved challenging after spending six years at the University of South Carolina (USC), where I completed my Ph.D. in Applied and Computational Mathematics in June 2012. Following my time at Ithaca, I continued my mathematical journey at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee.
My teaching career began as a graduate teaching assistant at USC and at the University of Texas-Pan American (where I earned an M.S. in Mathematical Science in 2006). During those years, I taught a variety of math courses to diverse student populations, and I also served as a Lecturer during the summer sessions of 2005 and 2006.
Although I have spent nearly three decades in the United States, my life has been truly multicultural. I was born in the United Kingdom and I spent my early childhood in the U.S. at Lakeview Elementary School and Valleyview Middle School in Denville, New Jersey. I then moved to India, finished high school there, and graduated with honors in Mathematics in 2001 from a women’s liberal arts college affiliated with the University of Calcutta. In 2004, I earned an M.Sc. in Applied Mathematics (specializing in Operations Research) from the institution now known as the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur, formerly Bengal Engineering and Science University.
