Travels with Pat

                              

Patricia Bashford, professor of communications, photography, and theatre, retired to Newburyport, MA after 40 years of teaching and professional employment in theatre and films.  Educated in drama and speech at Emerson College in Boston, she also studied at the American University of Beirut, Lebanon and Courtauld Institute of Fine Arts, the University of London, England.  She received her Masters in Speech Communication from the University of Colorado.

Pat's interest in photography matured during several years in Hollywood, California acting, producing, and editing for an independent film company.  As a story editor for a children's puppet film she also gained experience in animation and narrative through  the creation of action figures.

Her teaching career included full time faculty positions at Iowa State Univeristy in Ames, Iowa, Boston University, and the state system of community and state colleges in Massachusetts.  As a teacher of speech communication her courses also involved theatre directing and acting, television and film production, and writing for both the media and theatre.  She began teaching photography and film study courses in the late 80's and from this interest she proposed her sabbatical :studying film industries around the world.  During her research she traveled to Great Britain, Ireland, Scotland, the Netherlands, Russia, Germany, Thailand, Singapore, Cambodia and Honk Kong.  Hosted by the China Film Association she interviewed directors, producers, cinematographers, and actors in Beijing, China.

After her sabbatical she started showing her work - traditional black and white silver prints and cibachromes (prints from color slides).  A series of solo exhibits followed in college galleries and libraries.  During the summers of 1999, 2000. and 2001 she ran the photography workshop for the Art Conference on Star Island and began seriously exhibiting in open and juried shows throughout the North Shore region.  For several years she volunteered at the Maritime Museum in Newburyport restoring prints from their archives for exhibit.  Her interest turned to digital photography and with two other photographers mounted an exhibit of digital works at the Newburyport Art Association's main gallery.  An award winning photographer, Pat has had several solo shows.  Listed in Who's Who Among Professional Women and Women in the Arts, she sells her work to private collectors.
