Rally against Cove Point frack gas port 2/20/14

In the same way TransCanada is trying to force the Keystone XL pipeline on America's heartland, the Virginia-based company Dominion Resources is trying to force “Cove Point” on Maryland.

Cove Point is a radical proposal to take fracked gas from throughout Appalachia, send it through pipelines to Maryland, liquefy it on the shore of the Chesapeake Bay, and then ship it to Asia -- with the overall carbon impact of coal.

And just as people from all across America have united to stop Keystone XL, Marylanders are uniting on February 20th – in Baltimore – to stop Cove Point. Just like we don’t want a tar sands pipeline bisecting America, we don’t want Cove Point running fracked gas through our lives in Maryland. Both projects are colossal in scope, colossal in climate change impacts, and colossally wrong. On February 20th, we’re drawing a region-wide line in the sand at one historic Maryland event.

Join the rally to “Stop Cove Point” on Feb. 20th in Baltimore. Say NO to Dominion’s radical plan to export fracked gas. Say NO to extreme energy everywhere.

We’re holding this rally at noon – lunchtime – in downtown Baltimore because that’s when the Maryland Public Service Commission will begin hearings on permits Dominion would need to construct the $3.8 billion Cove Point facility targeted for Calvert County. We’ll have music, banners, and great speakers including Lois Gibbs of Love Canal fame and the Rev. Lennox Yearwood of the Hip Hop Caucus.

Here are the quick details:

WHAT: "Stop Cove Point" Rally in Baltimore
WHEN: Thursday, February 20th, noon-1:30pm
WHERE: War Memorial Plaza - downtown Baltimore
WHO: Hundreds of climate activists and fracking fighters from across the Mid-Atlantic and YOU. Co-sponsors include Calvert Citizens for Healthy Community, Citizen Shale, Food and Water Watch, HoCo Climate Change, Interfaith Power & Light, the Maryland Sierra Club, and many more!
JOIN US: Sign up now to join the February 20th rally. (Buses and carpools are being organized across the state.)

We’ll also have the giant “Stop Cove Point” pipeline prop at this rally. Have you heard about it? It’s been traveling the state the past few weeks, visiting areas that would be harmed by the export of fracked gas, including western Maryland (fracking), Frederick County (pipelines and compressor stations), and of course Calvert County ("liquefaction" ground zero). You gotta come see this pipeline in person on February 20th.

Join the rally to “Stop Cove Point” on Feb. 20th in Baltimore. Say NO to Dominion’s radical plan to export fracked gas. Say NO to extreme energy everywhere.

Wherever you live in Maryland we’ll help you get to the rally, putting you in touch with carpools and even providing buses from key areas. And if you live or work in Baltimore, just pop over to the rally at noon and spend your lunchtime with us at the War Memorial park across from City Hall.

Climate change is accelerating worldwide, which means dangerous fossil fuels like tar sands and fracked gas must stay in the ground. On February 20th come tell the Maryland Public Service Commission you want real energy solutions for our state, not more energy nightmares.  CCANers have been fighting for years to stop Keystone XL. And now we're on the frontlines of the fight to stop a climate disaster at Cove Point, too. We want wind and solar instead. We want energy sanity now!

See you in Baltimore,
Mike Tidwell
Director, CCAN
