INTELLIGENT MONITORING of TRAFFIC LOAD and FLOW of VEHICULAR CROSSROADS with IMAGE and VIDEO PROCESSING TECHNIQUES

Abstract: This research project will develop an intelligent monitoring of traffic load
and flow of vehicular crossroads with image and video processing techniques. The software
will be tested on specific image / video simulated traffic problems, ready to be embedded on
the intelligent traffic camera. Apart from the monitoring software, as application software
result we will develop a new optical multiple cars speed correlator as a traffic tool. We will
present an innovative automatic number plate recognition system. The main aim of the
research project is to use traffic video data and simulate real cross-road problems; cross-road
traffic is extremely difficult because it concentrates most traffic cases plus special cases
formed by the node geometry. We will include focus and filtering problems on traffic images
with some concern on night vision, with special refer to after fact focus. The final software
will be offered for embedded applications and an intelligent traffic camera. Laboratories of
Signal & Image Processing Lab of Informatics and Telecommunications (I&T) Dpt of TEI
Larissa (Prof Ventzas D), Data Base Lab of I&T Dpt of TEI Larissa (Assi Prof Garani G) and
Video Processing Lab of I&T Dpt of University of Thessaly (Assistant Prof Katsavounidis J)
will cooperate to exchange experiences, maximize and optimize research results.
